Zoe's obituary

Zoe Anne, who was known and loved by her family as Bug, Bug Bug, Buggers, Zo-Zo, or Zoe Buggers, passed away at the age of 14, just before her 15th birthday.

Zoe was kind and gentle, and she cared deeply about her family, friends, and pets. She loved cats and often said she never wanted kids, but would someday have 17 cats. Like a cat, she loved to snuggle and would curl up in a lap asking for head or back “scratchies.” She was also stubborn as hell and nothing would guarantee a firm “no” faster than trying to push her into something she didn’t want to do.

She enjoyed watching TV shows like New Girl, Rick & Morty,  South Park, The Rookie, and Schitt's Creek. She was very artistic and taught herself to draw by watching videos online, filling notebooks with sketches. She loved origami and, at one point, set out to fold 1,000 paper stars, and gave out bags of them to friends and family. She often worked on origami in class when she was supposed to be listening.

In the past year, Zoe became interested in ballet and began beginner teen ballet classes. She was especially thrilled to recently get pointe shoes and start pointe class.

She liked playing 7 Days to Die on the computer with her dad and Roblox with her friends. She had lots of sleepovers with two of her close friends—long, loud nights spent watching movies, playing computer, making ramen, and eating junk food.

Zoe enjoyed experimenting with her appearance. Over the past few years, her hair was at times purple, red, pink, blue, black, and natural. She once cut it into a long buzz cut to grow her natural color out, then letting it grow past her shoulders, and most recently chose a pixie-style cut she had been thinking about for some time. One morning, she emerged from her room to show off a septum piercing she had done herself overnight. Her day-to-day clothing and style was varied: black-on-black with Doc Martens, an all-pink Hello Kitty sweatsuit with pink boots, crop tops with baggy jeans and Converse.

Zoe was cherished and supported by her family and friends, and she also lived with an illness she did not choose. She fought her illness quietly and bravely, even when the depth of that struggle was not visible to others. Her family recognized her struggle, surrounded her with love, sought professional care, and did everything possible to support her. Even so, the illness won, leaving immeasurable heartbreak behind.

Her family takes comfort in knowing that Zoe knew she was deeply loved...she is profoundly missed, and will always be in our hearts.
