Nat's obituary

Zephaniah D. Owens aka “Nat” was born to John E. and Lillie M. Owens on November 10, 1958, defying the medical prognosis that he wouldn’t live past nineteen. Diagnosed with Down Syndrome at birth, Nat became one of the longest-living black men with this genetic disorder in Northeast Ohio, a testament to his resilience and spirit. Nat lived a vibrant life for 65 years until his peaceful passing on April 3, 2024.

Nat's journey included graduating from Weaver School and Workshop in Tallmadge, Ohio, where he later worked until retirement. He continued his journey at the Catholic Charities Day Center and later at the Community Habilitation Center until his passing. Throughout his life, Nat loved music, particularly oldies but goodies, and would cut a rug with anyone who dared. He was no doubt the life of the party.

The saying “it takes a village” has never been further from the truth. Nat was surrounded by his loving family - especially his dad and a tribe of caregivers who selflessly dedicated themselves to his well-being and care. He was preceded in death by his father John E. Owens, his mother Lillie M. (Cowart) Owens, and sisters Renee (Owens) Dandridge and Pamela (Owens) Worthy. He is survived by his oldest sister, Rita P. Owens of Akron, Ohio, and big brother Glinn Owens of Akron, Ohio.

Nat's passing leaves a void in the hearts of his immediate family, and countless other friends, who will forever cherish his memory and the impact he made on their lives. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered. Nat will be laid to rest at Western Reserve National Cemetery, where he will find eternal rest beside his beloved father. Though he may no longer be with us in person, his spirit will continue to dance on in our hearts, a reminder of the joy, and unconditional love he brought into the world.

To honor Nat’s memory, we plan to celebrate his life (date and location TBD).

The family kindly requests that gifts be sent to 1095 Orlando Ave. Akron, Ohio, 44320 in his memory. Your thoughtful gestures will be deeply appreciated during this time of mourning."
