Yong Hui Jerome (née Kuark) was born on January 28, 1951, in Seoul, Korea, the eldest daughter of 곽종선 Kuark Jong Sun and 박정순 Park Jung Soon. She returned to her heavenly home on the evening of May 1, 2025.

Yong Hui (baptismal name Esther) is survived by her loving husband Brian Arnold Jerome, son Timothy Young Jerome and his wife Erica, and grandchildren Dexter, Gabriel, and Everly Jerome. She joins her beloved granddaughter Brienanan in heaven. She is also survived by her brothers Sang Tae Kuark (Young Hwa), Ki Tae Kuark (Hye Cha), and Jun Kuark (Young Sil), and sisters Ae Kyung Lee (Frank) and Mi Kyung Kim (James). She loved her nine nieces and nephews (Hanna, Vincent, Christine, Mike, Ellie, Laura, Jessica, Daniel and Kristen) and their children.

Yong Hui met Brian in Seoul, the couple was wed and their precious son Timothy was born on September 9, 1970. The three of them moved to the United States around Christmas of 1970. Yong Hui and little Tim moved to the comfortable environment of Brian’s parents’ home in Buffalo, New York. They were welcomed warmly, immediately accepted into the Jerome family. Brian joined them in Buffalo where they lived for another two years. Brian's career as a chemist led the trio to Baltimore, Maryland; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Ames, Iowa; Brunswick, New Jersey; and Knoxville and Heiskell, Tennessee. Yong Hui and Brian’s adventures didn’t stop there—they continued on to live and work in Reno, Nevada; Thousand Oaks and San Diego, California; and back to Maryland where they settled in with Mikyoung and family in Ellicott City, then Dickerson.

Wherever Yong Hui was, she connected with people. She had a gentle, natural beauty and a sweetness to her smile that expressed more than words could ever convey. Her voice often had a playful twang and her eyes sparkled with knowingness. While living in Ames, Iowa for seven years, a young Yong Hui established her first deep connection with a Korean pastor who encouraged and advised her on her spiritual gifts. Yong Hui was blessed with gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, interpretation, discernment and tongues. She continued to heed her calling to pray for, mentor and encourage members of her communities, especially pastors, from this time onward, becoming intimately involved with the Korean churches and communities in each city she lived in. Word spread that Yong Hui’s prayers were deeply profound and insightful, and she spent the better part of her years, and days, praying for and counseling both loved ones and strangers, near and far, in person and by phone. Because no one is a stranger in the eyes of the Lord, Yong Hui treated each individual, regardless of the nature of their struggles, with God-given compassion and love.

Yong Hui’s love for Christ and prayer bonded her to her family and connected her to a global community. She supported numerous charitable causes, improving the lives of children and the elderly and impoverished, and sat on the Board of Directors of Cura Mission, a Christ-centered non-profit organization that provides aid to underserved populations in North Korea, the Philippines, and Mexico, with her sister Ae Kyung. As she transformed the lives of countless people who lived miles away, her own family remained her first priority. She was a devoted, unconditionally loving mother. She was always there for her son, Tim: to answer his calls, encourage him, and support him through the unimaginable grief of losing Brienanan. She exemplified Christ, setting the most meaningful example in his life. This sentiment is shared across Yong Hui’s family and friends.

Yong Hui worked as a certified dental assistant until she helped to open the Honey Pig family restaurant. She was extremely proud of her family for running such a successful company and found satisfaction in her supportive role. Her mother, who owned a seolleongtang restaurant in Seoul, was a formidable cook, and Yong Hui carried the tradition into her own home. She was undeniably popular with all of her nieces and nephews because of her famous spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, chicken cacciatore, macaroni, and meatloaf.

Yong Hui’s life was intertwined with her brothers and sisters’ lives. Her goal was to bring them to the United States, and they came, one by one. She supported her siblings through some of their most challenging times, and affirmed them in their most joyful moments, sharing milestones with each of them. She was pre-eminently family centered, and went beyond what one would consider an eldest daughters’ duty. She was a best friend, a motivator, and a kind, generous, protective, faithful, and positive force in the world. She uplifted everyone she could reach and was full of adoration of the Lord and hope for all His children. Yong Hui will never be forgotten. Because she blessed the lives of so many, and her counsel has materially shaped their lives, her presence will be felt far beyond the date of her return to God’s safe and loving arms.

We would like to thank the incredible teams of doctors and nurses at Johns Hopkins hospital for their compassion, expertise, and care of Yong Hui during the last weeks of her life, and her dedicated family members who stayed by her side at the hospital during her most vulnerable hours.

A celebration of Yong Hui Jerome’s life will be held on May 7, 2025, at 1 PM at Burning Bush United Methodist Church at 1611 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring, Maryland.

故 곽영희 여사님은 그리스도를 향한 사랑과 기도로 가족과 깊은 유대감을 맺고, 더 넓은 공동체와도 연결되어 있었습니다. 그녀는 다양한 자선 활동에 참여하였으며, 북한, 필리핀, 멕시코 사람들을 섬기는 그리스도 중심의 비영리단체인 Cura Mission의 이사로서 자매 이애경 님와 함께 사역에 헌신하였습니다. 먼 곳에 사는 이들의 삶을 변화시키는 데 힘쓰썼지만, 그녀에게 있어 가장 중요한 우선순위는 언제나 가족이었습니다. 그녀는 헌신적이고 무조건적인 사랑을 베푸는 어머니였습니다. 그녀는 언제나 아들 팀의 곁을 지키며, 부름에 응답하고 용기를 북돋아주었으며, 사랑하는 손녀 브리아난을 잃은 이루 말할 수 없는 슬픔 속에서도 아들을 끝까지 아들을 지지하고 위로하며, 그리스도의 사랑을 삶으로 실천해 보이셨습니다. 그녀의 이 같은 사랑과 믿음은 가족과 친구 모두에게 깊은 울림을 남겼습니다.

故 곽영희 여사님은 공인 치과 조무사로 성실히 근무하시다 마침내 오랜 꿈이던 가족 레스토랑 운영을 이루셨습니다. 그녀는 어머니로부터 물려받은 뛰어난 요리 솜씨를 이어받아 가족과 함께 '허니피그 (Honey Pig)' 레스토랑을 운영하며 큰 보람과 기쁨을 느끼셨습니다. 서울에서 설렁탕 식당을 운영하시던 어머니처럼, 영희 여사님도 그 전통을 이어받아 유명한 스파게티와 미트볼, 라자냐, 치킨 까치아토레, 미트로프 등을 만드셨습니다.

故 곽영희 여사님은 형제자매들과 삶을 함께하며 그녀는 형제자매들을 한 사람씩 미국으로 데려오는 것을 사명으로 여기셨고, 그들은 하나둘씩 미국에 왔습니다. 그녀는 형제자매들이 가장 힘든 시기를 견뎌낼 수 있도록 지지해 주었고, 가장 기쁜 순간에는 크게 축하하며, 그들 인생의 중요한 순간들을 함께 나누었습니다. 맏딸로서의 의무를 넘어, 가족에게는 친구이자 조력자 및 보호자였으며, 언제나 긍정적이고 따뜻한 존재였습니다. 그녀는 하나님의 자녀들에게 희망을 전하며, 닿을 수 있는 모든 이들에게 아낌없는 사랑을 나누었습니다. 영희 여사님의 존재는 결코 잊히지 않을 것이며, 그녀의 기도와 조언은 많은 사람들의 삶에 깊은 흔적으로 남아, 앞으로도 오래도록 기억될 것입니다.

故 곽영희 여사님의 마지막 여정을 함께해주시며, 깊은 전문성과 따뜻한 돌봄으로 사랑을 베풀어주신 존스홉킨스 병원의 의료진 여러분께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 또한 병상 곁을 지키며 마지막까지 함께해주신 가족분들의 헌신과 사랑에도 깊은 감사의 마음을 전합니다.
