Victor Tong

Thomas Wong - I met Dr. Tang in 1968. He was always ready to help the Chinese students and our activities. When the Hong Kong Club was formed, Dr. Tang became our advisor. Our goal was to serve our students and our university.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Tang helped the HKC to receive funding from the International Student Office to do cultural and other meaningful student activities.  Under Dr. Tang’s guidance, the HKC received special recognition from UNICEF for helping the course of the organization.

While Dr. Tang always opposed the ideology of communism, he never gave up his love and hope for his motherland, China. At a general meeting of the Chinese Student Association, the chairman refused to discuss a proposal of sending a letter of condolence to the victims of the Tang Shan earthquake in 1976.  Dr. Tang stood up and insisted the matter be put to a vote. The majority support the proposal and not a single person voted against it. Dr. Tang never failed to stand up for justice and taught us to separate politics from compassion to human that were suffering.

Dr. Tang never spoke about his own accomplishment. However, he was so proud of his son that he could not stop telling me about him. Dr. Tang’s son, Irwin dedicated his life to help the less fortunate and fight against injustice. At Texas A & M, he fought against South Africa apartheid and asked our school to support the idea. Bryan Eagle published a lengthy article about him and the protests. Later, Irwin traveled to poor countries to help their people. He gave up his comfortable life and lived in harsh environments. Dr. Tang, you did a great job. You raised a good man.

Dr. Tang ‘s daughter Irene, your father was very proud of you too. One time, we’re watching you shooting basketball in the driveway, your father smiled and told me you were the champ of your age group. You were probably six years old at that time.

Dr. Tang also told me that the luckiest thing happened to him was to have Mrs. Tang as his wife.

We are sad that Dr. Tang is no longer with us. However, we should be happy for him because he is definitely at a better and joyful place.

Victor Tong

Victor Tong - I went to Texas A&M in 1972 and has known Dr. Tang for more than 40 years.  Dr Tang taught freshman chemistry and his students told me that he was accessible, open and very clear about what he expected from his students.  There was no hidden agenda.

He was more than a teacher to the students from Hong Kong.  Dr. Tang was our advisor and provided guidance for our activities.  He came to many of our cultural events.  The last one occurred about 15 years ago, a re-union touch football game between the Chinese Aggies and the Chinese students from UT.

There was history behind the game.  In the 1970s, the Hong Kong Aggies and the Chinese students from UT held an annual touch football game.  These players decided to hold a re-union game after all these years.  So guys in our 40s and 50s gathered together in Houston to throw a football and ran after it.  Dr. Tang’s was there to cheer for the Aggies.  You could picture Dr. Tang as our twelve-man ready to take off his sweater to get in the game whenever we need him.  Dr. Tang was always ready to help.

If there were one thing we could be critical of Dr Tang was that he did not stand during the game.  He and Mrs. Tang brought their lawn chairs and sat the whole game!

Joking aside, Dr. Tang was a great role model for us.  He was adamantly against the Japanese government policies towards China.  But he showed great courtesy and went out of his way to help Japanese bridge players.  He was a person of principle and with much compassion.

Dr. Tang never hesitated to stand up for what he believed was right.  He stated his views sternly but in a polite manner.

He was a proud dad, we got showered in his fatherly pride every time he talked about the civil rights works his son, Irwin had been doing.

Dr. Tang was also a great bridge teacher.  He shared his love of the game by educating many players on how to bid and play.  There were a number of bridge Life Masters, myself included, that owed their bridge achievement from Dr. Tang’s teaching.

The image of Dr. Tang that I will take with me is his gentle and unassuming smile.
