Wray's obituary
Wray Leslie Phillips, Jr., affectionately known as “Butch” in his younger years, was born on Christmas Day, 1943, in Spokane, Washington, and passed away on September 23, 2025.
Wray is survived by his sisters Linda Steinle (Bill) and Ann Baker (Steven); his children David Phillips and Jessica DeRose (Matt); and his beloved grandchildren Owen, Quinn, and Isla DeRose — who all inherited a touch of his wit and charm.
A proud graduate of Barrington High School and Northern Illinois University, Wray earned his degree in Marketing but preferred to market his fishing stories and marathon times instead. He served proudly in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of SP5.
Wray was an avid runner, completing many marathons (including Boston and New York). He also made annual fishing trips to Alaska, often returning smelling like he’d wrestled the salmon himself.
Known for his dry, snarky humor and love of life’s lighter moments, Wray made every room brighter — and every conversation funnier. He will be remembered for his loyalty, his laughter, and the countless stories that will be retold for years to come.
A military burial ceremony at a National Cemetery will be held to honor Wray Leslie Phillips (rank SP5) attended by immediate family only
