Winston's obituary
On August 13, 2022, just a few weeks shy of his 88th birthday, Winston Russell Martin traded his early home for a heavenly mansion, robe and crown — a goal he aimed for his entire Christian life.
Known as Winston, dad, grandpa, great grandpa and Bro. Martin, Winston fulfilled a plethora of roles, some ranging from husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to minister, teacher, friend, brother-in-Christ and more. Before these titles, however, Winston was the son of Bennie and Estelle Martin.
Born in Alexander City, Alabama, Winston arrived earth-side on September 11, 1934. As the youngest of eight children, his older siblings included Verna Finch, Vida Mitchell, Manuel Martin, L.W. Martin, Beneva Dublin, Gladys Hawkins and Braxton Martin.
During Winston’s childhood, the Martin family migrated to Akron, Ohio to seek more opportunity and stability. After graduating from East High School, Winston completed two years of English courses at The University of Akron before enrolling at Moody Bible Institute, now known as Moody Theological Seminary. There, Winston learned the fundamentals of theology, Christian teaching and divine leadership before applying them to his countless responsibilities at the Church of Christ.
With over 50-plus years as a faithful servant, Winston held numerous positions throughout his Christian calling. From street side salvation to pulpit preaching, Winston’s portfolio included youth and interim ministry at Wooster Avenue Church of Christ in Akron, Ohio, ministry at West Russell Street Church of Christ in Villa Rica, Georgia, ministry at the Church of Christ in Adairsville, Georgia and over a decade of ministry at Callahan Street Church of Christ in Rome, Georgia. Upon his passing, Winston was the Minister of Evangelism, coordinator of the Restoral Program and one of two Elders at Callahan.
When he wasn’t behind the podium, Winston assisted with bible study classes, bible correspondence courses, new convert programs, prison rescue ministry, marriage and family counseling, sick and shut-in visitation and vacation bible school. His presence stretched across the United States as he participated in various campaigns, Evangelistic efforts, gospel meetings, lectureships, seminars, Church of Christ National Crusades and several youth conferences alongside his wife of 64 years, Gwendolyn Martin. A few of the states they frequented included Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas, Michigan and Florida.
Outside of church, Winston was a kind soul who loved sports, food, fellowship and family. He had an infectious laugh, hilarious dry sense of humor and a heart that never stopped caring. As the patriarch of the Martin family, he is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Martin, son, Bryan Martin, daughter, LaShaundra Worthey, grandchildren, Charlene Martin, Shedrick Martin, Sierra Nicholson, DaVorise Allen and Cherish Worthey, and great grandchildren, Mia McClarity, Ava McClarity and Greyson Martin. His extended family-in-love includes his sisters-in-law, Joyce Ford and Janice Brown, daughter-in-law, Susanne Martin, son-in-law, Rex Worthey and grandchildren-in-law, Chris McClarity, Paige Martin and Clevon Nicholson.
He has joined his parents, grandson, Dezmond Martin and siblings Verna, Manuel, L.W., Gladys and Braxton on the other side. Gone but certainly never forgotten, Winston’s presence will truly be missed. May his teachings and words remain impactful to all who have heard.
The family would like to thank Winston's medical staff and hospice team who helped him comfortably transition, along with those who showed their respect with cards, phone calls and visitation.
