Winston's obituary
Dale Atkins of Decatur, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on November 1, 2025, at the age of 82. He was born on May 21, 1943, in Greer, South Carolina, to the late Judson and Ruby Atkins.
Dale was a proud iron worker and longtime member of Iron Workers Union Local 387 until an injury led to his retirement in 1985. Known for his strong work ethic and boundless curiosity, he spent his retirement years tackling countless home improvement projects, tending his garden, and experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes—most of which turned out delicious. He also cared for a wide assortment of barnyard animals that brought him great joy and plenty of stories to share.
A true craftsman, Dale could build or repair just about anything—whether it was a house, a child’s toy, or a diesel engine—and he was often known to fix things that didn’t even need fixing. Above all, he loved spending time with his family who will remember his humor, ingenuity, and generous spirit.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Atkins; his sons, Blake Atkins, David Atkins, and Leslie Atkins; his eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Ben Atkins and Ann West. He was preceded in death by his brothers Ray and Vance Atkins.
A memorial service to celebrate Dale’s life will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Glen Haven Baptist Church in McDonough, Georgia. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 p.m.
Address: Glen Haven Baptist Church, 345 E Lake Rd, McDonough, GA 30252
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends honor his memory by taking on a project, planting something green, or fixing something that could use a little extra care—just as he always did.
