Leon's obituary

Winfrey Leon Freeze, 88, of Collinsville, Texas, passed away from complications with Alzheimer's disease on February 28, 2020, at Medical City Denton. He entered heaven with the family that adored him by his side.

Leon was born in Rocky, Oklahoma, on November 15, 1931, and was the firstborn of five children to the late Garland Lynwood Freeze and Avis Sipes Freeze. He grew up in Mountain View, Oklahoma, and graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1954 with a B.S. in Animal Science. Leon always considered being on the OSU livestock judging team as one of his greatest accomplishments. He was "tougher than nails" and was an Army Ranger from 1954 to 1956, serving as 1st Lieutenant. Leon met his loving wife, Janice Keller Bean, in Fort Worth, Texas, and they were married on December 20, 1960. He worked for THE CATTLEMAN magazine and the American Hereford Association before moving to Sulphur, Oklahoma, in 1972 where he started and built Turkey Creek Ranch. Leon had a passion for purebred Horned Hereford Cattle and registered Quarter Horses, especially concentrating on Shoemaker and Wiescamp bloodlines. After moving back to Texas in the mid-1990s, Leon worked as a real estate agent selling farms and ranches in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.

Leon and Jan were firm believers in Jesus Christ and raised their daughters with Christianity as their foundation. Leon is survived by his bride of 59 years, Jan; daughter Claire and husband Fred Nichols of Pilot Point; and daughter Leslie and husband Randy Hyne of Plano. He is also survived by five grandchildren including Elyse and husband Kaleb Merck, Elizabeth Obbie Nichols, Abby Hyne, Paige Hyne, and Paul Nichols; two great grandchildren, Harper and Ellis Merck; and siblings Kenneth Freeze, Gloria DeLong, Barbara Pritchard, and Susan Crismon. The family is having a private Celebration of Life service for this great man. Your prayers and support are appreciated more than words can express.
