Skeet's obituary

Winford “Skeet” Long

January 5, 2024

Irmo, SC - Winford “Skeet” Long, 79, the loving husband of the late Mary Long, went to be with the Lord while in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on January 5th, 2024. Skeet was born in Charlotte, NC to parents W.D. Long Sr and Mildred Long.

Throughout high school, he played football, sang in the choir, played multiple instruments and was voted most talented for several years. After high school, he joined the Navy where he served honorably for six years. The Navy taught him the value of honor, discipline, teamwork, and investing in a cause larger than himself. He used those core values along with the faith instilled in his life by his mother to later serve as a Deacon and sing in the church choir for many years. While serving at the church in many capacities, he also held a successful career as a Real Estate Manager at 3M National Advertising for 33 years. He instilled the same values he learned from his faith and career in the military into his family and friends. One of his most referenced quotes in life was by Minnie Pearl, “I’m just so proud to be here”, which became his lifetime motto he continued to speak into our family.

Skeet was a loving father and devoted husband that was pillar of love and compassion for others. Even through the difficult times, he remained faithful and steadfast in his love for the Lord. That light shined so brightly in how he cared for others and has left an imprint on all of those he crossed paths with in life.

Skeet was predeceased by his father Winford, his mother Mildred, his sister Libby and the love of his life, Mary.

He is survived by his sister Diane Smith, his children Shannon Laney, Ronnie Long, Rachel McLendon, Hannah Rockholz, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren as well as his former wife Linda Long and companion Becky Moon.

There will be a Celebration of Life Ceremony on Saturday 1/27/24 @ 300 Senate St, Columbia, SC 29201 at 1:00pm. Flowers may be sent to this address the day of the ceremony. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided. If you plan on attending the Celebration of Life, please RSVP on the memorial website by 1/19/24.
