Winford's obituary
Winford W. Gunter, 68, of Northport, AL, passed away on April 5, 2026. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family and beloved pets. Born on March 25, 1958, Winford dedicated over 40 years of his life as a senior master mechanic at Starkville Ford Lincoln/Cannon Ford of Starkville. His commitment to excellence and his caring nature earned him respect and admiration from both colleagues and customers.
Winford served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1976 to 1981, which was a significant chapter in his life, reflecting his dedication and patriotism. After his military service, he seamlessly transitioned to a career that matched his passion for mechanics and problem-solving. He was a man who cherished the outdoors and adventures and was often found fishing, camping, or riding his motorcycle. Above all, Winford valued time spent with his family, creating lasting memories with them. A faithful member of Adaton Methodist Church, Winford was also deeply involved in his church community.
Winford is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Vanette Gunter; children, Calon-Nicole Gunter-Cox (wife Kace), Brittany Hurst (husband Jason), and Stephen Gunter (partner Sarah); granddaughters Destiny Brantley and Delylah Hurst; siblings Eugene Gunter (wife Dorothy), Boyce Gunter Jr. (wife Sue), and Wanette Rish (husband Eddie). He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyce and Wanda Gunter, and daughter, Haley Gunter. In lieu of flowers, contributions to support his family can be made, as Winford did not have life insurance. His legacy of love, dedication, and service will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held on May 2, 2026, at 11 am at Adaton United Methodist Church in Starkville, MS. As part of the service, we invite anyone who knew Winford to share stories of how his life has impacted their lives. A shared potluck meal will be held immediately following the service.
