Wilton's obituary

A Life Like No Other

It is an honor to share the story of a man whose life was unlike any other. On Friday, November 12, 2021, Wilton Thomason, Jr., an unforgettably loving father, grandfather, and brother, passed away at the young age of 66. He was born in 1955 to Wilton and Maude Thomason in Brooklyn, New York. He was their first son, followed by his brother, Marvin Thomason.

His early life in New York taught him to be savvy and clever. He applied this intelligence to his studies at Brooklyn Technical High School and New York Institute of Dietetics. One of his earliest accomplishments was reading an entire encyclopedia from A-Z.

Wilton had a very fruitful family life. He married his beautiful wife, Doreen Thomason, on June 7, 1980 and they began a life in Atlanta, Georgia in 1981. His son, Terrance Thomason, was born in 1986 and his daughter, Traci Thomason, was born in 1990. He loved his kids more than anything in the world and taught them everything he knew. From an early age, he instilled a passion for academic excellence in Terrance and Traci. They went on to make their father proud by reaching great academic achievements including a degree in Chemistry from University of Miami for Terrance, and a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech for Traci. In 2009, Wilton’s first grandson, Cayden, was born and he fell in love all over again. After Cayden, Tatianna (2016), Calliope (2016), Trinity (2017) and Tyler (2018) were born and Wilton always took pride in being a loving grandpa.

He blessed many around the country with his unmatched cooking skills. Wilton was a chef and restaurant manager for the majority of his career. In 2000, he started his own catering company, Cosmic Catering. The motto was “food so good it’s out of this world” and he never failed to live up to this catch phrase. Cosmic Catering catered everything from weddings to the infamous Peachtree Roadrace. He did not limit himself to a specific cuisine as he was highly talented in capturing the flavor of many cultures. However, he was most known for his chicken salad sandwiches, which were made with butter croissants. He was also well sought after for his grenadine-infused chocolate-covered strawberries.

Wilton was incredibly worldly and adventurous. He loved food from all over the world and even studied various cultures. He enjoyed travel and unique experiences such as swimming with dolphins or horseback riding. Locally, you could frequently find him playing putt-putt golf or at the nearest amusement park. At home, you could be sure to find him in the kitchen making a multi-course meal or watching “Matlock”. He loved many genres of music but his favorite song was “Mr. Vain” by Culture Beat. Through his adventures, Wilton developed a love for unique items and symbols. He loved jade Buddah pendants, Mickey Mouse, Jordan sneakers, watches, and the yin and yang symbol. He enjoyed having these items represent himself and he would generously share these representations as gifts with his friends and family.

Those who remember him will always remember his witty personality and outgoing demeanor. One moment, he might have been telling you a joke and the next he would be teaching you about an herb from a foreign country. Wilton never held anything back and did not back down to anything that stood in his way. He wanted the world around him to know exactly who he was - and for that we are all incredibly grateful.
