The first and only time I met Bill he brought me flowers.
Guess I should explain by saying that Connor was/is a great friend of my son’s and often hung out at our place as a teen. One day he missed the bus home from high school and after not being able to find anyone else to give him a ride, he called me. I picked him up, brought him home and thought nothing more of it.
That evening there was a knock on my door and standing on the other side were Bill and a sheepish Connor bearing flowers as a thank you. While totally unnecessary, I thought it was a great example of good parenting.
Connor, I know you’ll learn from the examples your father set and be a great dad to Margot. My heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family.

I’ve known you for so very long that I have seen your lives grow in ways we never could have anticipated. We met as students at OSU during politically turbulent times. Most of the boys were in school to avoid the draft & Viet Nam. Lissa, my roommate, was studying blind & partially education and avoiding phone calls from Aunt Clara, a professor living on campus. One summer quarter I was focused on an independent study of Marxist literature, in Italy. Lissa’s summer quarter was getting married at one of the campus churches. You dressed in your best long, flowing black dress & that skinny boy’s hair was a mop of curls. I remember thinking ‘why would she want to do that?’
Now I know. Meredith, Connor, William, Owen, Margot, Chris, Katie - their every success, every milestone show me why. The abundant joy those kids, their families give is absolute radiance.
You made the right choice, Lissa. Bill, may you be at peace.

Bill was a great guy. Growing up as friends with Connor, I quickly learned where he developed his smart brand of humor. Being a guest at the Campbell household has always been a great time.
My favorite memories of Bill, outside of his general banter, are when he and Lissa invited me over for dinner, and Bill grilled about the best steak I’ve ever had! He also once sent Connor over with flowers for my mom after she was able to pick him up and get him home- I know as a fact that it meant a lot to her.
Frannie and I send our love and condolences to Lissa, Connor, Meredith, and the Campbell family.
