I just found the obituary for William Shriver, my first cousin. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I remember when bill was just a baby and mom, dad and I babysat him one evening. He started crying and to stop his crying we drove all over Cleveland to do it! At Christmas time Bill’s family and our family always spent Christmas together!
Kim (Reefer) Hirsch - Karen Shriver- so sorry to hear about Bill. Ihave many found memories of those summer exchange visits between Pennsylvania and Ohio- my prayers are with you and all of Bill's family.
Our most sincere condolences to you and all those who loved Bill. Bill was a great university supervisor for MVNU. He understood the demands of the classroom and worked hard to help mentor young teachers. Bill led a life of service to many organizations and his impact will be felt for years to come. We are praying for peace and comfort as you grieve this loss. 🙏🏼
I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Shriver’s passing and send my deepest condolences. He was one of my favorite teachers in the MV public school system, he brought history to life in his lessons and was clearly dedicated to the success of his students. His wry wit never failed to make me laugh.
Karen, Lauren and Matt, We are sorry about Bill. He was a wonderful man. I, Laura, enjoyed chatting about Wooster with him as a fellow alum, including our love of Coccia House Pizza. I also respected him and his knowledge with history and serving with him on the session at First Pres. So many good things to say about Bill that it is hard to choose. He will be missed by all. Prayers for the family. Peace.
Mr. Shriver was my favorite teacher. I have always loved history and he shared that love. He was unafraid to discuss the complexity of being a good citizen while opposing the war in Vietnam. He showed me that it was ok to be honest about the ideal while holding the tension of the real. He made me not just a better student but a better man and I've taken what he taught me into my marriage and into how I teach my own kids.
He was brilliant, humble, kind, insightful and I am lucky to have known him.
My late wife Crystal and I had the utmost respect not only for Bill's knowledge of history and mastery of pedagogical practices, his work in advancing respect for the teaching profession, and his mentoring of new teachers and Mount Vernon Education Association leaders, but also for his kindness and compassion. When Crystal first began teaching a couple of Spanish classes at Mount Vernon High School in the mornings before heading over to the Mount Vernon Nazarene University to teach Spanish full-time, Bill graciously offered her his classroom for one of her classes. He will be deeply missed by the Mount Vernon community and beyond. My condolences to Karen, Lauren, Matthew and the rest of Bill's family.
I am so very sorry for your loss and the loss to our community. As a fellow teacher, I felt as if Bill was a standard bearer for the teaching profession. My children had the upmost respect for his knowledge and skills as an outstanding history teacher at Mount Vernon Highschool. Bill Shriver was one of the great ones.
My dear cousin Karen and family: having lost my husband a little over a year ago, I can imagine what you are going through. What a tragic loss for your family. While its hard to let go, I know that his was a life well lived and filled with love. He is in God's heavenly embrace tenderly watching over you.
i've known and admired Bill for 40 years as a colleague and the teacher of my own children. I have been in awe of his mastery of the content ofmodern history and his dedication to his profession and his students. My sincere condolances to his family.
