William's obituary
William Merrill “Bill” Mazzei
We celebrate the life and legacy of William Merrill “Bill” Mazzei, who passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, in Humble, Texas, at the age of 72. Born on April 24, 1953, in Houston, Texas, Bill lived a life grounded in faith, enriched by love, and marked by a deep commitment to serving others.
Bill spent his early years in Houston, attending Mt. Houston Scenic Woods Elementary School and Charles Bender Junior High School in Humble. A proud member of Humble High School’s Class of 1971, he graduated with academic honors. He went on to continue his education at the University of Houston, laying the foundation for a life defined by curiosity, craftsmanship, and dedication.
Throughout his working life, Bill wore many hats and approached each role with integrity and care. A gifted carpenter, he built a home for his father, remodeled houses, crafted custom bookcases and shelves, and created props for church productions. Bill also worked as a packer for a freight forwarder, later started his own company, served as a Quality Assurance Manager for a valve company, and worked as a sales assistant at a hardware store. No matter the role, Bill brought diligence, creativity, and a servant’s heart to everything he did.
On January 1, 1990, Bill married Dian Ross Welch, beginning a loving partnership that spanned 36 years. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. Bill is lovingly remembered by Dian and their blended family: stepsons Glen Welch (wife Brandy) and Wayne Welch (wife Cindy), stepdaughter Betti Welch, grandsons James and Logan Welch, and granddaughter Lilith Fentress.
He is also survived by his mother, Velma Jean Kennedy Mazzei; his sister Linda Mazzei; and sister-in-law Sue Lockler Watkins, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who loved him dearly.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, John Bruno Mazzei; his brother, John Lockler ; his sister, Catherine Weiman ; his brother-in-law, Glenn Weiman; his uncles Otto Mazzei and Martino Mazzei; his aunt Violeta Dopman; and his cousin Robert Mazzei.
Faith was the cornerstone of Bill’s life. As a child, he attended his Granny’s church in Trinity, Texas, where he was often chosen to read scripture because of his clear voice and natural eloquence. After marrying Dian, Bill became an active and devoted member of First Methodist Church of Humble. His service to the church was extensive—he was a youth counselor and teacher, a member of the Praise Team and Praise Band, a sound booth volunteer, a Bible study leader alongside Dian, and a dedicated helper at outdoor events. His faith sustained him through life’s challenges and inspired all who knew him.
Bill’s passions were many. He had a lifelong love of music, playing guitar and other stringed instruments, singing with friends, writing songs, and sharing his talents through worship. He was also an avid stargazer who delighted in astronomy and spent countless hours with his telescope. In his younger years, Bill enjoyed football, baseball, backpacking, water skiing, and the great outdoors. Known for his quick wit and playful humor, he loved sharing jokes through texts and emails. His bright green eyes, deep dimples, and mischievous smile were unforgettable to those who loved him.
Bill’s legacy lives on in the many tangible gifts he created and the countless lives he touched. Through his carpentry, his mentorship of youth, and his unwavering willingness to help wherever needed, Bill quietly and faithfully served others. Even in recent years, as serious health challenges left him physically weakened, his faith never faltered. Surrounded by prayer, supported by loved ones, and strengthened by his trust in God, Bill faced these trials with courage, humility, and grace.
William Merrill “Bill” Mazzei will be remembered as a man of deep faith, generous spirit, and gentle strength. His kindness, creativity, and devotion left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
May his memory bring comfort and peace to those who loved him.
