William's obituary
He was born in Harlan, KY to William Bruce Lyttle, Sr. and Margaret Lyttle. He grew up in South Charleston, WV and after serving in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, attended West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV where he met his future wife, Ann Bertiaux. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Physics.
After teaching at Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, PA, and West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, WV, Bruce moved his family to Fairfax, VA. He worked for Melpar/E-Systems before establishing a career at the Night Vision Lab at Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, VA.
Bruce and Ann purchased a garden center in Purcellville, VA in 1976. In the early 1980s, he returned to work at the Night Vision Lab where he retired in the late 1980s. He and Ann moved to Raleigh, NC to be near their grandchildren.
Bruce is survived by three sons and their spouses, William Bruce Lyttle III and Gerri, Gilbert Keith Lyttle and Peggy and David Scott Lyttle. He is also survived by grandchildren Trevor S. Lyttle, William David Lyttle, John Gilbert Lyttle, Vivian Ann Lyttle and Meredith Jane Lyttle. He also saw the births of great-grandchildren Grayson Carter Lyttle, Emily Ann Lyttle and Cameron Grace Lyttle.
Bruce was predeceased by Ann - his wife of 40 years - in 1996; his son John Howard in 1967; and all six of his siblings: Nellie, Ruth, Mary, Billie, Adelia and Russell.
The family will hold a private memorial. If desired, a donation can be made to Transitions LifeCare Hospice Center in Raleigh, NC or the Dementia Alliance of NC. Bruce would prefer that in lieu of this that you do something memorable with your family.
Bruce’s family wishes to thank everyone who crossed paths with him along his journey.
Peace, love and happiness
