William Henry Lanning, "Gramps" to those he loved most, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 23rd, 2025, at the age of 92, at his residence in Tennessee. William was born on November 24th, 1932.

William (Bill) leaves behind his 3 children, Matthew Lanning, Cynthia Stanfa, and Rebecca Butler. He was also blessed with 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. He also played a part in lots of others' lives. (Carrie Gordon, Stephen Spahn, Nicole Spahn)

A true American patriot and a lifelong pillar of strength, William was a proud veteran and a survivor of the Korean War. He was awarded with 2 Purple Hearts. His commitment to service and his "hard core" yet adventurous spirit inspired generations, especially the women in his family who followed his path into the military—a source of immense pride for him.

William's greatest devotion was to his family. He was the loving and devoted husband to his wife, Helen Lanning. Together, they built a lasting legacy that included being a father, a cherished grandpa, a great-grandfather, and a great-great-grandfather.

An avid lover of nature and the outdoors, William found peace and purpose in his yard and garden. He was happiest surrounded by the wildlife he adored—his beloved koi fish, dogs, cats, turtles, and even the visiting deer. His summers were spent sharing his silly, adventurous nature with his grandchildren, creating indelible memories.

A man of great love and immense character, William Lanning will be dearly missed. He promised to look for his loved ones in the heavens, and his spirit will forever be felt in the strength and service of his family, and in the quiet beauty of the outdoors he so treasured.

William's service will be held December 7th, 12pm at Winnebago Cemetery, Winnebago, IL
