William's obituary

William “Bill” Leonard Klima, of Stafford, a successful patent attorney, inventor, entrepreneur, and remarkable father, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, July 11, 2022 at the age of 65.

Bill was born on July 11, 1957 in Baltimore, MD and is predeceased by his parents, Walter Klima and Dorcas Klima (née Schilling).

Bill spent his early years growing up in Pittsburgh, PA and Chicago, IL, before settling with his family in Buffalo, NY. Bill excelled both academically and athletically throughout his life. His love of the water started as a competitive swimmer and continued on later in life as an avid boater. Most weekends, Bill could be found boating on the Potomac surrounded by his family and friends.

Bill received his B.S. in aerospace engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his A.B. in chemistry from Syracuse University. Bill earned his J.D. from the George Mason University School of Law. Bill’s career as a patent lawyer spanned more than 30 years. He started as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in mechanical and medical device areas and then spent the remainder of his career in private practice. With a background in both aerospace engineering and an emphasis in organic chemistry, Bill focused his practice on technology areas that included electrical, mechanical, computer/ software, electro-mechanical, chemical/ mechanical, chemistry, materials, and designs.

Although Bill was a very successful attorney, he took the most pride in his role as a father. Bill is survived by his children, William “Ryan” Klima (Cecilia), Deirdre Klima, Ian Klima (fiancé Meagan Johnson), step-daughter Julia Randall (fiancé Brittany Marien), and youngest son Jonathan Klima. Bill is also survived by his grandson, William “Liam” Klima; older brother Walter Klima (Mary); younger sister Deborah Shissler (John); the mothers of his children, Susanne Hopkins and Lisa Klima; and cherished dogs Cricket and Milo.

Bill will be remembered as a true family man, with a genuine love of life and unique sense of humor. Anyone who was lucky enough to have Bill in their life knew that he was someone who was always there for a chat or a laugh, and would do anything for the people he loved. He was counted on to celebrate any achievement or lend a helping hand, whether for a family member, friend, or colleague. He was always ready with a kind word of advice and support when needed. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but his light and warmth will continue to be felt by all who knew him.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 23 at Temple Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Reid officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery.
