William's obituary
Doug loved life and cherished his family and friends. He had a big heart and enjoyed taking care of the folks in his community. He is most known for his sense of humor and spending many hours telling funny stories and jokes. Doug loved movies and the ability of stories to connect us to one another. Doug had staunch political views. His nephew, Jamie Hensley, was probably the only person who could get him to vote outside of his political party. He was a die-hard Chicago Bears fan and could often be found cheering for them.
Doug served time in the Air Force, attended Thornton Community College, and from there went to the Police Academy. He served Chicago Heights, IL and Harvey, IL as a police officer and achieved the rank of detective in Harvey, IL. Doug was a very successful businessman and entrepreneur. He was the well-known owner of Theatre Time Video. He had other businesses which included a consignment shop in Momence, IL, tanning salons in Momence, IL and McCaysville, GA, an arcade in Momence, IL, JJ Scoops in Momence, IL, The Dog House in Blue Ridge, GA, and Quiznos in Blue Ridge, GA. Doug also assisted many others in opening their own businesses. Doug was a member of the American Legion, on the board with the Women's Crisis Center, and volunteered at the Franciscan Outreach Association.
Doug’s ability to put a smile on anyone’s face was such a special quality. He would light up any room just by walking into it. Many of his customers would come into his video store just so they could sit laugh with him. He could cheer anyone up! Doug was a father figure, and he left a mark on the lives of many people. He will be greatly missed.
Family members left behind to treasure the memory of Doug include his sisters, Marie Chapman of Blue Ridge, Georgia; Jane Newton of Blue Ridge, Georgia; Debbie (Greg) Marsh of Lebanon, Ohio; brother Jeff Newton of Kentucky; son Bryan (Jennifer) Newton of Milford, Ohio; daughter Heather Ambrose of Fallbrook, California; daughter Penny (Mark) Kapanowski of New Lenox, Illinois; daughter Jennifer Newton of Canton, Georgia; daughter Jackie (Richard) Mitchell of Canton, Georgia; daughter Jamie (Justin) Canada of Canton, Georgia; grandchildren Grant and Luke Newton, Caleb and Gavin Ambrose, Austin Loos, Michael and Zachary Kapanowski, Elic and Connor Mitchell, Aubrey Davis and Lydia Canada; Nieces and nephews Troy and Kenny Newton, April Chapman, Stephanie Ingle, Samantha Spears, Adam Buckner, Melissa Nunn, Jamie Hensley, Mary Beth McCall, Ashley Hosick, Zack Newton.
