William's obituary
William (Bill) Blanc Monroe Duncan was a man who shone with the light of God. A faithful husband, loving father, adored "Grumpy," and the kind of friend everyone hopes to find. After a brief battle with cancer, Bill passed away in his sleep at home in Shreveport, Louisiana, on March 16, 2026.
Born on November 21, 1959, in New Iberia, Louisiana, Bill was the son of Donald Patterson Duncan Jr. and Arthe’ Vairin Monroe Duncan. Alongside his brother, Donald (Pat) Patterson Duncan III, Bill grew up with a foundation of faith and military discipline that would define much of his life.
As a young boy, he was enrolled in Military School. Later he formed many lifelong friendships as a student at First Baptist School.
Bill attended his beloved LA Tech, (Geaux Dawgs), before transferring to LSUS and graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology, prepared to build a life of service and hard work.
For thirty-three years, Bill was a dedicated member of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office. Never one to miss a beat, after retiring from CPSO on a Friday, he reported for duty at the Caddo Parish District Attorney's office on Monday morning. There he continued to serve Shreveport for twelve years. His professional accomplishments were many, including serving as a board member for the Caddo Crime Stoppers, as Captain at the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Investigator for the DA. However, his true “work” happened off duty while serving at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and later Grace Baptist Church. Whether he was leading Sunday school or serving as a greeter, Bill lived his life as an open door, welcoming everyone in with a genuine smile.
In his thirty-eight years of marriage to his beloved Betty Lynne, Bill proved that his greatest accomplishment was his family. Together, they raised two children who were his absolute pride and joy. Bill was the “Dudley Do Right” or “Andy Griffith” Dad, always making sure everyone was in line but trying to have some fun too. In recent years, he found his greatest joy in being a grandfather: as “Grumpy,” playing dress up with his “Honeybee” or cheering her on from the sideline/crowd of whatever activity sparked her interest.
Bill was a sports enthusiast from the start which began with his love with football at First Baptist School and then transitioning to Power Lifting while attending LA Tech. He would take that Power Lifting to the Law Enforcement Olympics, winning many competitions. After retiring from that, Bill needed to lose some weight and find healthier habits so he began running where he completed half marathons and full marathons, including a 50k and some sprint triathlons. Other hobbies he tried but didn’t necessarily conquer were golf, tennis, motor cycles and fantastic camping trips.
Above all his worldly achievements, Bill was a devoted believer in Jesus Christ. He diligently pointed his children and granddaughter toward the Savior, leaving a legacy that will echo for generations. While his family grieves his absence, they find profound comfort in the promise that they will see him again.
Bill is preceded in death by his father, Donald Duncan, his mother, Arthe’ Duncan, and his brother, Pat Duncan.
He leaves behind his wife, Betty Lynne Duncan; his children and their spouses, Christie LaFitte, and William and Kimberly Duncan. His legacy lives on in his cherished grandchildren; Avery Duncan and Liam Duncan. He is also survived by a host of church family and lifelong friends who will miss his presence every day.
Bill’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church officiated by Pastor Sean Armstrong, located at 5550 S Lakeshore Drive, Shreveport, Louisiana 71119. A reception will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grace Baptist Church.
The family also asks that those attending his Celebration of Life wear bright colors as we rejoice his conquering of the grave; his favorite color was blue.
