William's obituary

William Henry Agnew (1943 – 2024)

On Friday, March 8, 2024, Mr. William Henry Agnew, affectionately known as “Billy, Big William, or Pops”, passed away at the age of 80 in Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Agnew, a native of Mobile, Alabama, was born to the late Edna Harris Agnew on April 18, 1943. Mr. Agnew graduated from Central High School before attending Bishop State Community College prior to serving his country as a member of the military.

Mr. William H. Agnew was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War. During his military service, he was decorated with two bronze stars. After his military service, Mr. Agnew resumed college to earn a certificate in brick masonry. He also had a stable and fulfilling career with the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS). He retired from MAWSS after a 26-year career as a meter reader.

It was during his employment with MAWSS that William H. Agnew met the love of his life, Geneva. One fateful day, in 1986, William read the right meter, and fell in love. Their whimsical courtship soon found the two inseparable. The two decided to merge their families, and were married on August 22, 1988. Together, William and Geneva raised four children. While William loved music, nothing was sweeter to his ears than the sound of Geneva's singing.

After his retirement from MAWSS, William H. Agnew went on to work part-time jobs, the last being with Service Masters. He was a very hard working, kind, and devoted employee, a stellar coworker, an outstanding colleague, and an amazing friend. While he was a diligent worker, his favorite titles were Husband, Dad, Granddad, and Pops.

Mr. and Mrs. William H. Agnew were married for 35 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mrs. Geneva Agnew; his children William S. Agnew, Vernessa (Vince) Freeman, Ralph Bellamy, and Valencia (Ryan) Shelby; his grand-children William P. Agnew, Majesty Agnew, Jada (Antonio) Price, Cronus Banks, Torrin Bradley, Amarian Hardy, and Penelope Shelby; great-grand children Antonio Price Jr., and Axton Price; his brother Andrew (Judy) Agnew and his sister Carolyn Agnew; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Harris Agnew, and his brothers, Robert Agnew and Milton Agnew.
