Willa's obituary

Willa Janie (Meador) Gerrard

Willa Janie Meador was born on January 1, 1935, in McCall, Idaho to William and Emma Meador. She was the youngest of 6 siblings, all other siblings proceeded her in death. Janie, which is what she preferred to go by, often talked about growing up mostly living in houses without plumbing or electricity. Her family moved to the Rogue Valley in Oregon when she was 14. At the age of 15, she met Glen Gerrard, and married him at the age of 17 on May 16, 1952. She survived by 3 children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.

Janie was a go-getter and loved to keep herself busy. In addition to raising children, she worked in fruit-packing warehouses during the fall to make extra money for the family. Once all of the children were grown and out of the house, she started taking college courses and ended up working as a pharmacist’s assistant in various hospitals. She ultimately became a Class A Pharmacy Technician. Upon retirement, she become involved in volunteer work and received many awards and accolades for her contributions.

Glen preceded her in death on November 30, 2017 at their home in Pasco, WA. Approximately a year later, she moved to LaVernia, TX and lived on the Minor Ranch, owned by her son-in-law, Gary. Having grown up around chickens, horses and cows, she surely enjoyed her final retirement days in the countryside. She was also still involved in social activities, volunteering when she could and meeting with other elderly in the community.

Following a stroke, she was spending time in a rehabilitation center but became suddenly ill. She was moved to a hospital where members of the family remained by her side during her final days. She passed on the morning of September 28, 2023, at the age of 88.

For those wishing to join the family and celebrate the life of (Willa) Janie Gerrard, a Celebration of Life will be held October 28 (Saturday) from 2:00-6:00pm at the home of Gary and Sheri Minor, 248 Cibolo Ridge Drive, LaVernia, TX 78121.
