Wendy Lewis lived by the words, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give," [2 Corinthians 9:7] and she embodied this fully. On Sunday, June 9, 2024, at the age of 72, Wendy peacefully transitioned, leaving behind a profound void in the hearts of her family and friends. She was known for her sweet and compassionate spirit, deeply cherished by all fortunate enough to have known her.
Wendy's life was defined by her unwavering faith, boundless love, and generous devotion of her time. Her caring nature extended beyond her immediate family, embracing others as kin and offering her home to those in need. Her passion for genealogy led her on a journey to explore her ancestry, reflecting her profound appreciation for family roots.
Wendy's artistic talents were a vibrant expression of her creativity. From crafting and sewing to baking and painting, she poured her heart into her creations. As a skilled seamstress and passionate artist, Wendy's paintings and murals adorned the homes of loved ones, a testament to her love for art and generosity of spirit. She never sold her art; she painted purely for the joy it brought her.
Wendy's love of life was infectious, evident in her involvement with her community through initiatives like Food Share and her cherished time with the women's group "Sistah Girlz." Whether enjoying breakfast club gatherings on her back porch or pursuing her artistic endeavors, Wendy radiated warmth, humor, talent, and resilience.
In her own words, "my hands weren’t sewn on backwards." Wendy Lewis finished her life's journey with grace, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and selflessness that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Wendy entered the world on October 22nd, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York. She spent her childhood in Middletown, New York, and later established her family in East Hartford, Connecticut. Following her retirement, Wendy relocated to Pollocksville, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis Frazier Walker and Herbert Burroughs Sr. Wendy is survived by her husband, Leslie Lewis Sr., and her beloved life partner, Robert Morgan Sr. Her memory is cherished by her siblings: Deborah Lewis, Francine (Terry) Reynolds, Pamela and Robert Smith, Herbert Burroughs Jr., and Beth (Darlene) Burroughs, along with her partner, Marvin Bryant.
Wendy leaves behind a loving family: her children Curtis Lewis Sr., Leslie (Amir) Lewis Jr., Tatia and Willie Hayes, and Kinyata and Reginald Lester. She was also adored by her grandchildren: Nichole Lewis, Curtis Lewis Jr., Jaukwan Lewis, Kadeja Lewis, Andre (Bud) Allen, Shariff Lewis, Jeffrey Skipper Jr., and Milan (Mookie) Lester, as well as her great-grandchildren: Zionah Smith, Ziajah Smith, Kham’ryn Lewis-Corcino, Tru Lewis, Trillion Lewis, and Sariah Skipper and Ailena Lewis. Additionally, Wendy was cherished by her bonus children: Latonya (Peaches) Major, Turhanda (Tiny) Major-Russaw, Shawntay Major, Lillian Moore, Byron Morgan and Zalyce Morgan.
Wendy chose cremation, and a memorial gathering to celebrate her life will take place on July 6, 2024, from 2:30 PM to 5 PM at the Elks Lodge located at 30 Bissell St, Manchester, CT 06040. In honor of Wendy's wishes for a joyful celebration, her family kindly requests that attendees refrain from wearing black attire.
