Wayne's obituary
After an unexpected medical emergency on Monday May 5, Wayne Patterson Crockett, 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family at Vitas Hospice Unit in Lake Wales Florida on Sunday May 11, 2025.
Wayne was born on June 6, 1950, in Jacksonville, FL. He was the youngest of four children born to Winnifred “Winnie” Stevens Crockett and L. David Crockett. Wayne married his wife of 54 years, Margaret “Peggy” Crockett, on June 5, 1970. Together they had two daughters and seven grandchildren.
Best friends, Wayne and Peggy shared a host of adventures including home-building, business ownership, ministry, world travel, RVing throughout the continental US, and tiny home living. Though Wayne’s life started and ended in Florida, across his lifetime he lived in many places including Arlington Heights, Illinois; Norman, Oklahoma; Hancock, New Hampshire; St George, Maine; and most recently, Lake Wales, Florida.
Creative and curious, Wayne loved learning, from woodworking to meditation he was always exploring ideas and developing new skills. With an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Wayne often spent his spare time researching his interests. He was a lifelong spiritual seeker and recently relished a newfound sense of loving presence in the here and now with an acceptance of what he considered true reality. Wayne treasured relationships. With a balance of sober reflection and well-timed humor, Wayne cherished discussing life experiences and insights with dear friends, family, and chosen family members including Terry Paquette, and Andy and Heather Milo.
Wayne was survived by his loving family; his wife, Peggy Crockett; daughters Jessica Rousseau and Jamie Crockett; his grandchildren Kylie, Sawyer, Gavin, and Cobin Rousseau; and Amadea and Zevan Woollacott; and his older siblings Kitty Schaller and Davy Crockett. He was predeceased by his parents, Winnie and Dave Crockett; his older sister Trish Barnes; and his grandson, Asher Rousseau.
Wayne’s family are grateful to neighbors, friends, and family who showered us with love and support during this difficult time. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the Polk County EMTs, the providers at Davenport Avent Health Heart of Florida and Vitas Hospice Unit in Lake Wales.
Join us for a Celebration of Life as we share stories and music to remember Wayne and the many ways that he touched the lives of others. The gathering will be a potluck style celebration held on Saturday June 7, 2025, at 11am at the Clubhouse, Saddlebag Lake Resort, 499 Saddlebag Lake Road, Lake Wales, Florida.
