Warren's obituary

It is with deeply saddened hearts that the Short family notifies the community of the recent passing of Warren Jerome Short on August 31, 2024. He went to be with the Lord at the Veterans Hospital, after a courageous hard-fought battle with Congestive Heart Failure.

Warren was born in Cashion, Arizona on May 19, 1931, to Jewel and Eugene Warren Short. After moving to Hanford, California at an early age, he spent endless days playing with his brothers Nathan and Kenneth (both deceased). He also worked very hard on the family farm where they raised cattle and grew crops. It is from his rural upbringing that Warren learned to do just about anything.

He was a handy builder and was ingenious about fixing things, indeed, he could fix just about anything. He graduated from Hanford High School (which held a special place in his heart) where he would later return as a teacher for 33 years.

After graduating high school, Warren attended the University of California at Berkeley, earning a bachelor’s degree. He then promptly enlisted in the United States Navy and earned the rank of Lieutenant junior grade assigned to the USS Higbee, a gearing class destroyer.  While assigned to off-ship training in Mexico, he first met the love of his life Dimpna (deceased), a budding local artist to whom he was married for 64 years. After serving active duty on the Higbee he served for the Navy reserve for 5 years and was promoted to Lieutenant.

Warren and Dimpna, moved to Hanford, where they raised their three children, Annette (Turner) (deceased), Suzette (Peters), and Edward. Warren was further blessed with his grandchildren Fraser, Gavin, and Brenainn Turner; Nicole Peters (deceased) and Jay Peters; and Carmen and Savannah Short, he is also survived by many great grand kids, nieces and nephews.

Warren loved the Lord, his country, family, friends, good food, teaching, camping, hiking, learning linguistics and studying history and various international cultures (pretty much in that order). He did not know a stranger and could always be found talking to (and fascinated with) the life stories of those around him. Warren was also a fascinating man with whom to converse since he always had a moment to share a life story (or share a joke) and was truly concerned with communicating the need for all of us to forgive and love one another.

We are grateful to the in-home caretakers and hospital staff for their dedication and tender care of our beloved Warren. A Rosary service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11:30 am (immediately followed by Mass) at Saint Brigid’s Catholic Church, 200 East Florinda Street, in Hanford, California. A reception will follow Mass.
Remembrances may be made with flowers or send donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (Warren’s favorite charity) at stjude.org (Memorial Donations and Gifts). To send flowers please contact Ed Short at (916) 591-6850.

While we are very saddened by our loss, we are rejoicing that our beloved Warren is no longer in pain and is resting with the Lord. His most repeated scripture was: John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends”. When you remember Warren, please think of John 15:13.
