Background
My father tragically passed away unexpectedly on January 23rd, 2025. I am my Dad’s only child and he was unmarried so by law, I would be his legal heir to his estate. Unfortunately I will be needing to handle this all through Texas Probate Court as we expect there to be issues regarding a person that was in his life. At the same time, the Medical Examiner just did a full legal investigation and identified me as the Legal Next Of Kin, so I have been in charge of getting my dad’s remains to the funeral home and handling the cremation. I chose the most basic cremation, with the cost totaling $845.00- which my Aunt paid for and I’m deeply grateful. The next cost is going to be in court… the need to hire an attorney, file the forms, request documents and the need to be going between Houston, TX and Las Vegas, NV to handle Court hearings. This is all overwhelming and I am uncertain of a cost it will even take to handle probate as I’ve never done this before. Instead of just mourning such a tragic loss, I am forced to protect my rights as his only child and direct heir to all my dad’s belongings and have been putting all my time into trying to figure this all out.
