Background
Affluence, privilege, and access to land and generational wealth have long been the characteristics of those people fortunate to engage in equestrian sports and recreation. In America today, that means the sport is overwhelmingly white—not by accident, but by design and modern exclusion.
Strides for Equality Equestrians (SEE) exists to interrupt that reality. SEE advances access to equestrian sports and recreation for equestrians of color of all ages, creates real pathways into equestrian professions and advancement, and promotes informed allyship through education and action.
In honoring Walter’s deep love of riding and his belief in access, opportunity, and joy, the Claytor family has chosen to direct memorial donations to support SEE’s fully funded immersive opportunity—a week-long experience that enables Black, Indigenous, and other equestrians of color, regardless of age, to train alongside an upper-level professional rider. This opportunity removes financial and structural barriers while offering meaningful exposure, mentorship, and connection within the sport.
Through SEE, our gift in Walter’s name will help expand who gets to experience the power, discipline, and freedom of equestrianism—and ensure that belonging includes people like him. Contribute
