Walter's obituary

Walter Alan Buster, known to friends as Alan and to his Texas family as Pete, died on November 29, 2024 from a heart attack in his home at age 79. Dr. Buster was born in Houston in 1945 and grew up on the shore of Galveston Bay in Morgan’s Point, Texas. He attended Oberlin College where he graduated in 1967 with his Bachelor's Degree. He attended Middlebury College where he attained his Masters Degree and met his wife Kathleen Haverick. He finished his Doctoral Degree in English Literature at the University of Virginia and went on to teach literature for 36 years. The bulk of his career was at Marlborough School, Westlake and Harvard-Westlake. He was a beloved teacher and twice won the award for Outstanding Teacher at Westlake. He worked extensively with the College Board and helped write and perfect the AP examinations in English language and literature. He gave conferences internationally on how to teach AP English. He was a prolific writer and editor. He is thanked in over 20 books for his assistance and he published numerous articles in The Atlantic Monthly, Scribner’s Encyclopedia of American Lives, and The Dictionary of American Biography. He was passionate about literature, early American film history, and classical music. He was a staunch liberal and a committed voter. He is most remembered for his kind and generous nature. Dr. Buster is survived by his wife Kathleen, in memory care, his sister Karen, and his children Anne and Nicholas, and his grandsons, Bennett and Griffin. Services will be held at All Saints in Beverly Hills on January 11 at 12 noon.
