Walter's obituary

Walter Borrero Toro 1972 - 2024

Son of Hector and Gloria; Walter lives on through his wife, Monica; Sons, Willie, and Brandon; Daughter, Thalia; Granddaughters, Marianna, and Anaiz; And brothers, Tony, Frank, and Gerardo.

Walter was born on October 28th in Ponce, Puerto Rico and was deeply proud of his heritage. He was an expert on Ponce’s history and undiscovered treasures. He’d happily serve as a guide for his loved ones during visits back home. In his early twenties he moved to New York City where he met the love of his life, Monica. Together they raised three children, the most important parts of his life.

Walter was a devoted father, beloved grandfather, and a ray of light for his family. He was thrilled to become a father and instantly took to the role. His oldest son gave him the greatest gift the day he entered his life. He took every opportunity he could to match their outfits and teach his son to be just like him. That was his mini-me. With his youngest son, he shared his love of animals. They’d bring so many animals home that the house soon became a zoo. He raised his son to be fearless and adventurous, and to explore, just like him as a child. He’d stand by both of his sons no matter what, and he admired them for the men they became. For his daughter, he provided the greatest sense of warmth, comfort, and security. He always knew the right thing to say or do and built her up to be strong for herself. He never settled for anything less than exceptional when it came to her. His wife was the pinnacle of love for him. He appreciated her as a woman, mother, and friend. He’d always make her laugh, and they’d debate over who was the better cook, which he consistently argued was him (and won). They could be found dancing at any given moment and enjoying each other’s company. He ignited a spark in her, and she did the same for him. They cared for each other immensely.

Aside from being an incredible father, Walter was a wonderful man all around. He was well-groomed and took great pride in his appearance. He always had a fresh cut, clean outfit, and the confidence to match. He became so skilled at cutting his own hair, that he even started to do his sons’ hair and offered haircuts to some of their friends too. He’d also do his family's makeup for Halloween and came up with crazy hairstyles to match. He learned to do just about anything to make them happy. He had a love for music and his joy when listening was contagious. He was never too shy to get up and dance or bring out his favorite instruments and start playing along. He was the loudest, proudest Boricua, and everyone knew it. Nothing could stop him from letting his voice be heard. He was a very talented cook and made sure everyone had a chance to enjoy his food, nothing could compare to his recipes. He was talented with his auto body work as well. His finished work was impeccable, and he had infinite knowledge in that field. He was the kind of man that would take on new challenges and there was nothing he couldn’t do himself. The biggest sense of accomplishment for him came from sharing those skills and his know-how with others and offering a helping hand whenever he saw an opportunity to do so. All these amazing parts of himself allowed him to form many meaningful relationships throughout his life. He was just the kind of person people gravitated towards. He always felt the need to share what he had with the people he loved, whether it was a home cooked meal, his handiness around the house, or support and a good laugh in times of need. The moment he'd receive something special, he'd already be considering who he may be able to gift it to next. The best gift he has ever given his friends and family, is the lifetime of beautiful memories, and endless heartwarming and hilarious stories. Those that were fortunate enough to spend time with him really got to see how special he truly was.
