Walter's obituary
In Loving Memory of Walter Barwick
Walter Charles Barwick is the son of William and Fannie Barwick of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born on September 6, 1939. He was the oldest of two children. He was educated in the Cincinnati Public School System. He was brilliant, so brilliant that he was promoted to the 11th grade. Before he started his educational journey, he held jobs as a postal worker, police officer, and detective in Cincinnati, Ohio where he received an associate's degree in law enforcement. Walter always wanted more because he saw little to no potential to advance his career in law enforcement, so he decided to pursue higher education. He received a B.A. degree in secondary education from the University of Cincinnati. After receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati, he then earned a master's degree and Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Michigan State University.
Furthermore, thanks to his extensive education and astounding work ethic he was blessed to hold many prestigious titles. He was a school counselor, assistant principal, and principal at East Lansing, Michigan. He left Michigan and became principal at Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut. He later transitioned from secondary education to higher education by being appointed Dean of Graduate Studies in counseling psychology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He was vital in developing this program. During his tenure at UMES (University of Maryland Eastern Shore), he was selected to be in the illustrious White House Fellows Program. During this two-year program, he was preparing himself for a leadership role in academia. Thanks to this program he was able to obtain the title of Vice President of Academic Affairs at both Bowie State University and Coppin State University. He co-founded the Black Satellite College Network which provided distance learning for historically black colleges. In his later years, he turned to entrepreneurship to create a legacy for his children and grandchildren.
Dr. Walter Charles Barwick "Sonny " to family and close friends had an extraordinary, beautiful, and complex mind. He was a devoted father and very supportive of his sister, aunts, uncles, and friends. Dr. Barwick leaves to cherish his memory an ex-wife and friend, Gertrude Flowers Barwick, his daughter Mitzi L. Barwick, son Scott Walter Barwick, daughter-in-law LaChonde Martin Barwick, beloved grandsons, Matthew and Jeremiah Barwick, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins' colleagues, and community members.
