Walter was born on December 22, 1949 in Lynn, Massachusetts. He was the oldest of four children born to Walter Clyde Barton, Sr. and Amy Lee (Cook) Barton. Walter graduated from Boston English High School in 1967. He graduated from Springfield College in 1971, with a degree in psychology. In 1973 he graduated with a Masters in Divinity from Colgate Rochester Divinity School. He began his clerical career in Western New York and retired from Golden Hill UMC in Bridgeport, CT.

During his 40+ year career he met, befriended, and inspired hundreds of people from all walks of life. He was truly beloved by all.
