Background
2019 was a pivotal year for our family: our father learned that he was finally going to get a donated kidney and our mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.
The kidney transplant took place in Toronto General Hospital and our father received excellent ongoing care from the Transplant Clinic. The transplant allowed him to live dialysis-free and to be able to look after our mother for the first few years of her Parkinson's Disease.
As it turned out, both of our parents had a variation of Parkinson's Disease. Unfortunately our mother's was atypical and treatment-resistent. The support group for caregivers of people with atypical Parkinson's was incredibly helpful in helping us navigate the various stages of this awful disease. In addition, the Movement Disorders Clinic at Baycrest also took great care of both of my parents.
The Ina Grafton Gage Home was where our mother spend the last year of her life. The staff took great care of her from the moment she arrived until the day of her passing. People who work in Long Term Care Homes are truly special. Contribute to Parkinson Canada
