Vivian's obituary

Vivian Marie (Lowe) Shank, first daughter of the late Thomas Lowe, Jr. and Frances Spotwell Lowe-Jarrett. Vivian, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Indiana was born on December 30,1942.

At the age of 81, Vivian passed away on July 14, 2024. She was a beloved Daughter, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Auntie and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Vivian received and earned her formal educational schooling at Indianapolis Public School #56.

She continued her education by graduating from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree (1991) a master’s degree from Indiana University/Purdue University - Indianapolis Campus.(2000) and later became a Social Worker at LaRue Carter Hospital.

Throughout her career, she was known for her hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others.

Vivian, held membership with the National Association of Black Social Workers  of Indianapolis, Coppin Chapel and Crossroads A.M.E. Churches. Vivian was also an active member of the Flossie K. Bailey Missionary Society.

For a long time, she was active with Gamma Phi Delta, Gamma Chapter Indianapolis - a professional women’s sorority as well as The Eleganz Social Club of ladies who planned and promoted unique cultural experiences for their children and friends.

After retirement, Vivian enjoyed volunteering with the VA office, and was always eager to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with others. She was an active member of her community both at home and at church, volunteering for various causes and organizations.

But more than anything, Vivian was a devoted mother and foster mother to over 20 children. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, sharing stories, watching them play sports, and enjoying her favorite TV shows. She was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement no matter what challenges they faced.

In 1963, Vivian became wife to Lewis Ray Shank Sr. She is survived by her loving mother, Frances Jarrett and her warm-hearted sister, Jennie Conn, Esq. and was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas I. Ameen a.k.a Thomas E. Lowe (2014). Vivian was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Ray Shank, Sr. (2003). Vivian is survived by her devoted children; Lisa Marie Shank, Lewis Ray Shank, Jr. (Donna), Christopher Lowe. Shank (Shannon) nieces, and nephews and her beautiful grandchildren; Lori Shank, Khyran Shank, Justice Shank and Journey Shank. She is also survived by her extended foster daughters Teresa Patton and Latasha Williams, and her adoring extended foster/adopted grandchildren; Abrianna Smith, Desmonet Stapleton, Corey Stapleton, Joshua Sebree, Brianna Green, Chenelle Hart, Abria Patton, Katelynn Patton, Didier Mahan, Emilee Mahan, Aiden Mahan, Charilee Mahan, Traci Maxie, Tonya Rollins and Manning Rollins.

Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
