Vivian's obituary

Vivian Berube Cote

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Vivian Marie Berube Cote, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Thursday, January 28, 2021. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the days leading to her death.

Vivian was born at home in Throne, North Dakota on September 8, 1930. Vivian was the eldest of 8 children, born to Alma and Philiip Berube. Vivian is survived by her children Paulette, Jeff, Pam, Darlene, Janell, Dean, and Kathy as well as their families and children. She was preceded in death by 5 of her 8 siblings, her daughter Denise, and her husband of 54 years, Urbain.

Vivian had a love for all things cooking and crafting. It dated back to her childhood when she took her first job at 14, as school girl, sewing fancy embroidered pillowcases for one of the ladies in town. This led to a love of embroidery, cross-stitching and later, as her eyesight worsened, knitting and crocheting. Vivian also had a fondness for hummingbirds and made sure she had feeders out for them in all her homes.

Vivian met the love of her life, Urbain, in the late 1940s while she was working on his sister Fern’s farm in North Dakota. After a few years of friendship, they wed on June 28, 1950 “because he loved her” (according to Urbain). Vivian and Urbain loved each other unconditionally, until he passed away in 2004 from cancer.

Vivian was spunky, tough, and had a witty sense of humor. She loved her bingo, penny slot machines, her 5pm “happy hours” and she fiercely loved her family. She also loved her “stories” – the soap operas that she (and Urbain) watched since the early 1950s – and visited the set of Port Charles and General Hospital with her granddaughter, Shelley, when she and Urbain traveled the entire United States in their van.

Vivian created a beautiful and welcome home in many states through her life.

She lived in North Dakota, Seattle, WA, Hood Canal, WA, Apache Junction, AZ and most recently in Lynden, WA with her son Dean and his wife Ginger. Wherever Vivian was, guests were always welcomed with a hug, a drink, and a hearty laugh.

A celebration of life will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Sedro-Woolley, WA on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 11:00 AM.
