Ven's obituary

Vivencio Laniog de la Cruz, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home on October 18, 2022. Ven, as he was affectionately known, was a decorated veteran and proudly served 20 years in the United States Coast Guard. He continued serving his beloved country for another 20 years at the Navy Public Works Center in Oakland, California.

Ven was born on January 13, 1927 in Camarines Sur, Bicol, The Philippines to his parents Ventura and Cecilia de la Cruz. He graduated from Ateneo de Naga University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. When he was 30 years old, Ven enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed at Coast Guard Air Station in Salem, Massachusetts.

During his time in Salem and Boston, Ven met and fell head over heels in love with Gloria Tamayo Dorin while she was attending Boston University. After a three year courtship, they were married on July 14, 1962. His one and only daughter, Cecilia, was born four years after they wed. In 1969, Ven was called to active duty in Vietnam.

After returning home from Vietnam in 1970, Ven received his last assignment which was at the Coast Guard Island Alameda. Ven and Gloria were charmed by the little beach town and decided to settle down in Alameda, on Bay Farm Island, where they raised Cecilia and thrived for over fifty-two years.

Ven retired from the USCG in 1977 as an FS1. Soon after, he was employed as a Materials Controller for the Navy Public Works Center. Ven retired from NPWC in 1997 and concluded his 40 years of honorable military service.

When Ven and Gloria both retired, they discovered their passion for bowling and world travel. Together they have been to the most amazing places including Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Portugal, Russia, Spain, and Switzerland, just to name a few. In between their travels, they were actively involved in the Alameda Senior’s Bowling League and thoroughly enjoyed this time being active and social with good friends.

Vivencio is survived by his loving wife Gloria; daughter, Cecilia; sister, Herminia Tawagon; brother-in-law, Pedro Dichoso; nephew, Victor Dichoso; niece, Roselle Gregory (Robert); nephew, Alan Dichoso (Eileen); godson, Joseph Burke (Nancy); godson, Michael Burke (Kristi); sister-in-law, Patria Abada; numerous nephews and nieces; and numerous grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
