Penny's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Virginia "Penny" Mitchell, a radiant and resolute woman who left a mark on everyone she met. Born December 25, 1947, Penny found peace on August 17, 2025. Her final days surrounded by those that loved her.
Penny was a pillar of strength and love, a woman of wisdom and wit, known for her sharp intellect, sterling confidence, and quick humor. She was fierce and tender, complicated and kind, and she could make you laugh until you cried.
A lover of adventures, Penny was an avid reader who relished having a gripping novel in hand and a refreshing Pepsi to sip. She loved Frappacinos and cheered passionately for her favorite football teams. A woman of faith, she was a regular attendee at The Healing Place St. Clair and valued her time spent volunteering at the church's food bank.
One of Penny’s most beautiful qualities was her deep love for animals. She had a fearless way about her, never hesitating to walk right up to any dog and offer a gentle pat, somehow instantly earning its trust. That same openness drew people to her as well. Folks often found themselves sharing their deepest secrets with Penny, knowing she could hold it. She loved visiting Wolf Connection and when she couldn't be there, she loved to hear the stories of the wolf pack from her daughter.
Penny carried a deep-seated love for her family. Her proudest achievement was her children and grandchildren, who brought immense joy and fulfillment to her life. She is survived by her daughter, Ree (Thomas) Merrill, son, James Brewer Mitchell III, grandson, James Brewer Mitchell IV, granddaughter, Candace Mitchell, sister, Charlotte (Howard) Summerford, sister, Betty Duncan, and brother, Jerry Penn.
She was predeceased by her father, James William Penn Sr, mother, Gloria Ann Roberts, brother, Jeffrey Stephen Penn, brother, James William Penn Jr, and sister, Victoria "Vickie" Penn Carter, just eleven days prior.
In 2019, Penny embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Europe with her family, a trip that deepened her love for discovery and adventure. She especially fell in love with Paris, a city that captured her heart with its beauty and charm. When she returned home, she brought that magic with her, transforming her bedroom into a little corner of Paris , a daily reminder of a place that had forever inspired her spirit.
Hers was a root-deep legacy that will continue to flourish like a great live oak, providing shelter and whispering love to future generations. Penny's spirit will endure in our hearts, her stories will continue to inspire us, and her wisdom will guide us forever. She will be dearly missed.
