Virginia (Ginni) Ellen Gates Humphreys (1953-2023) Obituary
Ginni Gates Humphreys entered into eternal rest on the evening of Thursday, September 28, 2023, surrounded by family and extraordinary medical professionals. She had recently turned 70.
Born August 27, 1953 in Indiana, Pennsylvania to Kenneth Eugene Gates of Tide, Pennsylvania and Shirley Jane Weitzel Gates of Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ginni especially loved babysitting for neighbors’ children in her teenage years and graduated from North Central High School of Indianapolis, Indiana in 1970.
1985 found her relocating with her family to Augusta, Georgia, where in 1988 Ginni began a long journey to becoming a Registered Nurse, graduating from Augusta Technical Institute in 1989, Georgia Military College in 1991 and the Medical College of Georgia as an RN, BSN Cum Laude in 1993.
Recognitions that followed on the Medical College of Georgia’s 3-South unit included Best Patient Advocate (1994-98) and Best All Around Staff Member (1997) as a specialist in Adult/Adolescent Psychiatry. She would later transfer to MCG’s Center for Clinical Investigation charged with conducting patient studies of innovative medications.
In her extraordinary life Ginni enjoyed travel, DJing in clubs and hotel lounges including the Sheraton Pittsburgh, and especially the jangle and whir of casinos, making “Blazing 7s” a favorite.
Medical challenges in 2002 led to professional retirement.
In 2016 Ginni moved to Rogers, Arkansas where she resided until relocating to Rochester, Minnesota in 2023 to receive treatment at the Mayo Clinic.
She is survived by Aunt Virginia Joll of York, PA, brother Gary Eugene Gates of Evansville, IN, daughter Jennifer Ann Lord of Brentwood, TN, son Drew Humphreys of Alpharetta, GA and grandchildren Hazel Humphreys, Brandon Humphreys and Theo Humphreys of Alpharetta, GA and Dakota Davis of Brentwood, TN.
