Virginia's obituary
She was the daughter of the late Chester and Treva Hersh. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, David Funderburg and son, Chester Funderburg. Virginia was a native of Dayton Ohio. In Virginia’s younger years she enjoyed art and archery. At one time she held the national record for the “clout shoot” in archery.
She moved to California in the early 50’s and attended secretary school in southern California. In 1957 she met Dave and they were married soon after in Las Vegas. They moved to Humboldt County in 1966 decided to stay and raise their family in Weott. Over the years Virginia was involved in the community with several organizations including Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA, and the ladies Auxillary of several Veterans groups that Dave was involved in. For the most part she was a stay at home Mom. She worked several different jobs over the years. They included being the U.S Mail carrier in the Holmes/Shively/Pepperwood and Mc Cann area and also was “The Avon Lady” in the area for many years.
In 1976, Dave, Virginia and family moved to Eureka where she worked for the Times-Standard newspaper in the Circulation Dept. That is where she was known as “The Sarge”. Later on She worked At White House Furniture and then for the Carpenters Union as their secretary where she retired in 1992. After retirement, Dave and Virginia traveled a lot around California to different American Legion meetings. They really loved their “Legion” family.
They spent the next 14 years in Phillipsville enjoying “the property” they bought. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends with swimming, horseshoes, and many many barbecues until 2006. Then they sold the place and headed for Roseburg Oregon. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved spoiling her grandchildren on Birthdays and Christmas.
Virginia is survived by her daughter Carol(Lynn) Lytle, daughter Denise(Walt) Doremus, son David(Amy) Funderburg and daughter Treva(Gordon)Peters. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grand-children, and her cousin Ruth Ellen Hoecker. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Due to current travel restrictions a celebration of life service will be announced at later time.
