Virginia's obituary
Virginia Lee Dorsey (Granny to all who knew and loved her) 86, of Tyler, Texas, passed in the early morning of April 8th, 2023 on her birthday in care of the wonderful people of Hospice of East Texas.
Virginia was born in Longview, Texas, to the late LaVerne and Lee Melton on April 8th 1937. She moved to Tyler in 1949, and graduated from Tyler High School in 1954.
She met Carl E. Dorsey after he returned from the Korean War. They both attended Tyler Jr.
College; he was a member of the Apache band and she was an Apache Belle. Virginia graduated from Tyler Junior College in 1955, and she and Carl married on September 16th 1955. They were happily married 58 years as of 2013, when Carl passed.
Virginia worked for her entire career in the oil and gas industry; first for Sinclair Oil Corp., which became ARCO Oil and Gas Company. She worked in Tyler, Turnertown, and then White Oak.
She loved what she did, and retired from ARCO after 45 years of dedicated service. She was active in the Desk and Derrick Club for several years, and was President and elected First Lady.
She was also in Beta Sigma Phi.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church for 40 years, where she was also a Sunday school teacher. She joined Green Acres Baptist Church in 1986.
She loved raising her grandchildren, vacationing with family, attending sporting events of all of her loved ones, and spending time with her great grandchildren. She especially loved watching the Chiefs play and win.
Virginia was preceded in death by her mother, LaVerne Melton; stepfather John Melton; brother, Dwayne Melton; husband Carl E. Dorsey; and her best friend Gail Norris.
She is survived by one son, Eric Dorsey of Whitehouse; granddaughter, Alexandra Lacy and husband Savian Lacy; grandson, Gunnar Dorsey and wife Sabrina Dorsey; 3 great grandsons, Sebastian Lacy, Savian Lacy Jr. (SJ), and Emmitt Dorsey. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is also survived by her best friend of 63 years, Red Norris who has been like brother to her; and her beauty operator and very close friend of 50 years, Carolyn Vandergriff.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Doctor Becker, Nurse Kiki, and all of the staff at Hospice of East Texas for taking such wonderful care of her.
