Virgilio's obituary

In Loving Memory of Virgilio Veloso Oriza

It is with deep sorrow and profound love, that we announce the passing of Virgilio Veloso Oriza—a beloved husband, devoted father, and cherished friend—who passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and children on June 14, 2025, just days before his 74th birthday.

Born on June 26, 1951, in the Philippines, Virgilio was the eldest of eight children to Robert and Salud Oriza. He carried the responsibility of his role with humility and quiet strength.

Virgilio was exceptionally intelligent, driven, and self-made. He was at the top of his class at FEATI University in Manila. Through hard work and determination, he graduated with honors and received his Engineering degree in 1973. While juggling school and work, he still managed to ace every exam, impress professors, and even built a small business on the side—writing essays for classmates who admired both his brilliance and work ethic. He was deeply respected for his sharp mind and tireless dedication, and those early years laid the foundation for the remarkable life he would build.

He immigrated to the United States in 1981 to pursue new opportunities and a better life, first settling in Hayward, CA, later moving to South San Francisco, and eventually making a home in Los Angeles with his wife of 43 years, Nida Sulit Oriza, where they raised their family.

Virgilio’s career in mechanical engineering was both fulfilling and dynamic, taking him to places far and wide. His work allowed him to collaborate with people from all walks of life, many of whom became lifelong friends. Known for his skilled hands, reliability, and calm leadership, he was deeply respected by both his employers and colleagues.

At home, Virgilio was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his loving wife Nida, and their four children: eldest daughter Katrina, son Michael, and twin daughters Andrea and Kayla, all of whom he adored and prioritized above all else.

He brought laughter into his home, often playing lighthearted pranks and sharing jokes with his kids when they were having a tough day. He showed them that joy can be found in the everyday and that life is meant to be lived with laughter. He was the calm in every storm, the steady hand, and the soft place to land.

The kitchen was one of his love languages—where he poured his heart into meals that brought his family together. He didn’t need to say much; his care was always felt in his actions.

Nida lovingly remembers: “When Ver and I first met, I fell for his cute face, his Levi jeans, and that cherry red Celica he drove on our early dates. He was so confident, so charming—and yet so tender and thoughtful. When I was pregnant with Katrina, he was already in full ‘protector mode.’ He was always watching over us. With him, I felt completely safe.”

His twin daughters recall with warmth: “One of our favorite memories was going to the Santa Anita racetrack with dad. He’d treat us to snacks and sodas, give us piggyback rides, and let us pick our favorite horses. It was so simple—but he made you feel loved.”

His eldest daughter Katrina shared: "I remember having dance parties as a little girl with my dad and brother out on the patio. We’d dance to Madonna, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Prince—so many great artists. We would laugh so much, and my dad always had this huge, joyful smile on his face as we danced together. It was a lot of fun, and one of my favorite memories of being with him."

His only son Michael shared: "I remember when my dad bought me my first video game console — a 1985 Nintendo. I was so excited and happy — it felt like the greatest gift in the world. The first game we played together was Duck Hunt, I didn't realize at the time that it wasn't just about the game, it was about sharing that experience with my dad. It's a memory I will never forget."

Virgilio was loved by many. His kindness, humility, and generosity left a mark on everyone who met him. He had a way of making you feel like you belonged. He was handsome in every season of life—always effortlessly charming, but never boastful.

Though he was a man of few words, the way he lived spoke volumes. He gave without hesitation, loved without conditions, and stood strong for the people he cared about. His legacy lives on in the family he raised, the friends he embraced, and the countless quiet acts of love he offered throughout his life.

Virgilio Veloso Oriza will be missed beyond measure—and loved for all time.
