Vinette's obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Vinette Madge Billings, RN (retired) on May 29, 2024. Born in Jamaica on Oct 4, 1939, she led an exemplary life filled with warmth, wisdom, kindness, and selfless service, touching numerous lives through her generosity and steadfast dedication to family, friends, and her career.

Survived by her loving husband, Oscar Billings, whom she married in 1963, and their adoring daughter, Sonia Billings, Vinette's legacy of love will live on. Her family and the vast friendship circle she built over the years stand as a testament to her engaging, sincere, and caring nature. With gentle good humour and loving ways, Vinette truly was the heart and soul of her family, giving purpose and meaning to the lives of her loved ones. She was not only an exceptional mother and wife but also a cherished friend, aunt, sister, niece, and cousin who touched the lives of many.

Vinette started her journey in Jamaica. She moved to London, England in 1959 to pursue a Nursing Degree. Over the years, she lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, carving a space of love and warmth in every home she inhabited.

Vinette was a passionate healthcare professional starting in 1966 on the wards of Putney Hospital in London. In 1968, she passed the examinations of the Central Midwives Board, setting the foundation for a career dedicated to guiding new life into the world and providing antenatal care to countless women.

Vinette, Oscar, and Sonia emigrated to the United States of America in 1970.

In 1970, Vinette started working at North Charles General Hospital (Johns Hopkins Medical System) in Baltimore, before moving on to Plantation General Hospital in Florida, 1977. She retired in 2000 from Vitas Healthcare, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled commitment and service to the nursing profession.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Vinette was a person of refined taste who savored fine dining. Her personal style included  hues & textures inspired by nature, often evoking a garden in bloom. Every element of her life was selected not just for its appearance but also with attention to detail and an insistence on quality.

Among the many pearls of wisdom Vinette imparted, she was a beacon of strength and faith, teaching her daughter to be proud of her heritage and accepting of others. She embraced motherhood with profound love and care.

Vinette was empathetic and intuitive with an uncanny ability to give  someone a boost just when they needed it the most. Her words were always thoughtful and sincere and her warm, welcoming manner  made everyone feel valued, understood, and loved.

We celebrate Vinette's life and honor her memory. Her warm presence and authenticity brought so many people together. While she may have passed on, her gift of love remains, lighting the path for all who had the privilege of knowing her. Here's to a life beautifully lived that will continue to inspire. Rest in Peace, Vinette.
