Vincent's obituary
Everyone who met Vincent Holman complimented his infectious smile, laugh and cheerful personality. He exemplified his personal mantra, "Good spirits, good thoughts, positive results," never letting his nearly 25-year battle with Primary Lateral Sclerosis cloud his outlook, even in his final days. The businessman, producer, and family man died on Saturday, July 6, 2024. He was 60 years old.
Vincent had a lifelong love of music and theater. After an appearance as the Teen Angel in a college production of Grease, Vincent was cast as a member of the Reach Ensemble in Vy Higginsen's production of Mama I Want to Sing, the longest running black off-Broadway musical in American history. Following performances in New York City and a national tour, Vincent expanded his talents and ventures. A prolific writer, his self-produced play, He Is Worthy To Be Praised, was performed before audiences in several venues in Newark, New Jersey. He also formed the R&B group Vin C. and the Gimme Girlz.
A devoted husband and father, Vincent made sure to spend time with his family. Every summer there would be trips to Wildwood, NJ, with mornings spent playing on the beach and afternoons on rides; another favorite weekend outing was going to Chuck E. Cheese with his kids. Because he wanted his children to know their culture, he regularly organized presentations during Black History month. The family historian, Vincent documented events both big and small with his video and still camera.
Vincent Holman was born in Newark, NJ to Barbara Brock and Ernest Holman (deceased) on September 30, 1963. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, he moved to Irvington as a child, where he lived until his marriage. Being the eldest, he was very close to his brother Stephen and cousin Croswell Harris; the three of them grew up as siblings. After graduating from Irvington High School, he attended Upsala College in East Orange, NJ graduating in 1985 with a major in Business Administration and a minor in Theater.
While pursuing his entertainment career, he held several jobs including Rutgers University Bookstore manager, Business Developer at AT&T Corporate Finance and finally Senior Collector at MBNA Corporation (now Bank of America), from which he retired in 2005. Throughout his illness, Vincent continued developing new business endeavors and entertainment projects.
Vincent accepted Christ as a teenager at St. James AME Church in Newark, NJ. An active member, he was a frequent soloist as a member of the Young Adult choir. His faith was important to him and he made sure to "train up" his children in the church, taking them regularly on Sunday mornings to worship. Though not able to attend services in-person, he remained a member of St. James until his earthly transition.
In 1978, Vincent met his person, the love of his life, Pamela Beth Stewart, at church. After 10 years of friendship and courtship, they married in St. James on July 30, 1988. Today, the day Vincent is laid to rest, is the 36th anniversary of their wedding. Vincent and Pamela's union produced two children, Mel Nichelle and Vanessa Noelle. In 1997, the family moved to West Orange, where Vincent resided until his death.
Vincent leaves many beloved family members to mourn his passing: his wife Pamela, his child Mel (Synon) Holman, his daughter Vanessa Holman, his mother Barbara Brock, his brother Stephen (Pamela) Holman, cousin Croswell (Jackie) Harris, loving aunts Dolores Williams, Janice Boyd-Stuckey and Diane Boyd. His memory will also live on through a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other family members.
