Vernon Odell "BJ" Maxwell IV
Dr. Vernon Odell Maxwell IV, affectionately known as "BJ," passed away on February 3, 2026, in Irmo, South Carolina, at the age of 42. Born on November 11, 1983, in Columbia, South Carolina, BJ lived a life marked by intellectual achievement, professional excellence, and a deep appreciation for the things he loved. BJ pursued his education with dedication and distinction. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Carolina and went on to achieve a Doctorate of Engineering from Clemson University. His academic accomplishments laid the foundation for an impressive career as an engineer with Komatsu. BJ's work took him across the globe to Japan, where he spent several years at Komatsu's world headquarters. During this time, he became completely fluent in Japanese—a testament to his determination and adaptability. Beyond his professional achievements, BJ had a vibrant array of interests that brought joy to his life and those around him. He was an avid fan of Pokémon and shared a passion for Japanese anime with his beloved wife, Lisa Benfeld Maxwell. NASCAR racing and robotics also held special places in his heart, reflecting his diverse interests and inquisitive nature. BJ is survived by his loving mother, Angel Williams Maxwell; his sisters Barbara (Lenard) Stone and Danielle (Eric) Kohl; nieces Gina, Nora, Cassie, and Tatum; nephews Kevin, Austin, Tanner, and Brett; one great-nephew; uncles Michael Maxwell; aunt Jennifer White; and grandmother Hennie Maxwell. He was predeceased by his father Vernon "Bubba" Maxwell; his wife Lisa Benfeld Maxwell; grandfathers Vernon Maxwell and Jack Williams; grandmother Nina Williams; niece Karlie; and nephew Mark. A public Celebration of Life honoring both BJ and Lisa will be held at a later date. Private family services will take place. BJ's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. May his legacy bring comfort to all who cherished him.
