Verla's obituary
Verla Loreen Berg, 84, of Gresham, Oregon, passed on December 26, 2023 from peritoneal cancer.
Verla Loreen Berg was born on June 15, 1939 to Verlin and Anna Marie Thayer in Toledo, Oregon. She was the oldest of seven brothers and sisters. In 1953 her family moved to North Portland where she attended Immaculata Academy.
After graduating from high school, Verla started her first job as a telephone operator. For a period of time she was a homemaker, participated in a bit of modeling and entered the Mrs. Oregon Pageant in the early to mid 1960’s. Afterward, she attended Business college and after graduation she held positions as a receptionist and bookkeeper. Verla’s last position was restaurant manager. This position brought her much joy. She loved to interact with the customers with many coming specifically to see and visit with her.
Verla and former spouse Everett Bernhardt married when Verla was 20 years old in April 1960 and had two children, Christopher Bernhardt in 1961 and Alison Knieriem in 1962. In 1970, Verla married Robert A. Berg. They were married for 33 years.
When Verla retired, she spent her time in genealogy research, compiling many many photo albums of all her treasured family photos, cross stitching, and outings with her sisters and brothers. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Later in life, Verla enjoyed playing Bingo, (she was the Bingo Queen), bunko, and solitaire. Verla was also very fond of her cat Mocha, who was by her side always.
Verla was predeceased by her father Verlin Thayer, her mother Anna Marie Sperling, James Sperling, spouse Robert Berg, sister Sharon Leonard, and brother John Thayer. Verla is survived by her children Chris and Alison, sisters Marge and Geri, brothers Larry and Dennis, 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Athey Creek Christian Fellowship, 2700 SW Ek Rd, West Linn, OR 97068 on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 10:00 am. Internment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
