Valerie's obituary
Valerie Gail Kirland Perkins was called home to be with her beloved mother, Betty, on August 29th, 2022. Born on July 10th, 1959, she graced this earth with her goodness and light for 63 years. Val graduated from Cotton Center High School as a part of the Class of 1977. She later attended Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX until 1981, where she met Edward A. Perkins, Jr., to whom she would be wed for 14 years. After obtaining her Masters of Geology in 1983 at East Texas A&M in Commerce, TX, she and Ed moved to Connecticut, where they had a child, Lorien. After working in the City of Simsbury office in Simsbury, CT, she became a certified teacher and started teaching as a substitute in area schools. This was the beginning of her lifetime devotion to educating young people, which she would continue at her alma mater of Cotton Center ISD after returning to Cotton Center, TX. She taught science to middle and high school students there for 12 years, covering everything from junior high life science to AP physics, and later moved to Wilson, TX, where she taught for another 14. In her spare time, Val was a prolific quilter, often working together with her lifelong best friend, Shiela Pomykal, to create beautiful works of art that will be cherished for years to come. She also enjoyed scrapbooking, singing both in choir and in the car, and studying the Word and teachings of the Lord. She is survived by her child, Lorien Perkins, her brothers Jeff and Glenn Kirkland, and her father, Roy Kirkland.
She will have a celebration of life at Cotton Center First Baptist Church on Monday, September 5th at 11 AM. As a woman of science and boundless compassion, Valerie would greatly appreciate it everyone attending her celebration of life is fully vaccinated and wearing a face mask. If you are unable to be vaccinated, please test yourself prior to attendance. If you are feeling ill or have been recently exposed to COVID, please stay home, send us your address and we will make sure you are sent a small token to remember her by.
