Valerie Julianna Majzik (née Mohácsy) passed away peacefully in Hamilton, Ontario, on June 17, 2025, just shy of her 101st birthday.
Born in Nagykanizsa, Hungary, on September 5, 1924, to vitéz Emil János Mischon (Mohácsy) and Erzsébet Lechner, she lived a life marked by war, migration, and profound cultural change.
Her legacy is one of resilience, determination, and deep-rooted identity.
Valerie was widowed young when her first husband, Gusztáv Szakolcai, died during World War II.
In 1956, she fled Communist Hungary with her son, Ákos, during the revolution and rebuilt their life in Canada as refugees.
Later in Toronto, she married Miklós Emhecht, with whom she had her son, John Emhecht.
Her third and longest marriage was to Gyula Majzik, her devoted husband of 37 years, until his passing in 2008.
She is survived by her son, John; grandchildren Katie (Isaac), Stephen (Tony), Greg, and Andrea (Marcel); by Évi, the widow of her son Ákos; and by her nephews, Gabi and Emil Jr.
She also leaves extended family across North America and Europe, including her great-nephew Gábor Lechner, his wife Manla, and their daughter Gabriella, as well as the Lechner, Mohácsy, and Aggházy families.
She was predeceased by her husbands; her son, Dr. Ákos Szakolcai; her brother, Emil; his wife, Ilmi; and their son, Peter.
She was very proud of her long career as an accountant and later as a Realtor, working at Canada Permanent Trust and then RE/MAX.
A lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church, Valerie drew strength from her faith.
She especially loved summers at the cottage on Lake of Bays, chicken paprikash, and spirited card games.
In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be returned to Hungary and interred in the family crypt at a later date.
