Background
In November 2020, we found out Valerie's cancer had spread to her brain. She had a large brain tumor that had to be removed and her oncologist, Dr Block, encouraged her to get the tumor tested with the Nagourney Institute.
The Nagourney Institute tests different combinations of drugs on the tumor itself to see which drugs work and which drugs do not. “The use of this testing enables the patient’s treating physician to prescribe agents with the highest probability of improving the patient’s outcome and minimizing unnecessary toxic therapies.” Unfortunately this type of testing is not the standard of care for cancer patients. Typically the drug is prescribed based on the cancer type and the patient is given a few rounds of it to see if it works or if another drug is needed.
This was something that would have been costly but she applied for assistance through the Vanguard Cancer Foundation (founded by John Stamos' mom) and they paid for her tumor testing. This was a blessing as they were able to identify several treatment options for her cancer through the tests, although she did not live long enough to see these treatments through, we believe that the Nagourney Institute and Vanguard together are a great partnership and option for those who have cancer to receive optimal care and work through the best options for a more customized treatment. We believe Valerie would have been honored to give back to them so they can help more people afford testing. Contribute to Vanguard Cancer Foundation
