Ulrich's obituary
Mr. Ulrich Guenther Paul Piepenhagen, 85, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on June 17, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Born on April 1, 1940, in Berlin, Germany, Ulrich's life was defined by resilience, service, and a steadfast commitment to those around him. He immigrated to the United States and pursued higher education, earning an Associate’s Degree from Old Dominion University—an achievement that reflected his dedication to personal growth and learning.
Ulrich served with distinction in the United States Navy for thirty years, from 1958 until his retirement in 1988. Rising through the ranks to retire as a Lieutenant Commander, he was a decorated veteran whose service was honored with the Bronze Star. His military career stood as a testament to his bravery, loyalty, and unwavering sense of duty.
Affectionately known as “Mr. P” within his community, Ulrich was known for his quick wit and generous spirit. He had a natural ability to connect with people—whether through a shared laugh or a thoughtful conversation—and left lasting impressions on all who crossed his path.
Ulrich was a devoted family man. He was the loving husband of the late Lois Piepenhagen and a proud father to William Pilcher and Scott Piepenhagen. He also held dear the memory of his daughter Shirley Shriver. His legacy lives on through several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whose lives were touched by his encouragement and love.
He is also remembered by his surviving brother Thomas Piepenhagen. Ulrich was predeceased by his brothers Frank Piepenhagen and Hans Christian Piepenhagen.
A Viewing will be held on July 1, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, Virginia. A Funeral Service will follow on July 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the same location.
