Tim Gnadt
1996, Park N' Save; 25th Street, Sheboygan; Produce Department.
I first met Trevor Williams when we worked together in the produce department at Park N’ Save when we were both in High School. At the time, I had no idea how deeply that job and that meeting would affect my life. Trevor and I soon found out we had a shared interest in music and I, of course, got caught in the powerful hurricane force that Trevor’s personality could draw you in with. We became fast friends.

Trevor told me he played guitar and I told him I wanted to play the drums. He asked why I didn’t. I said because I didn’t have a drum set and because I didn’t know how. He convinced me to go to a place he knew, which I could generously call a used music store, on South 8th street in Sheboygan that was only open at night and when the proprietor was around. I found the ‘store’ and told the guy I was looking for a full kit and he sold me a 1968 Ludwig 6-piece kit with a modest amount of hardware. I don’t remember how much I paid but there is no way it was more than $150. I still have that kit.

Now that I had a drum set and Trevor had a guitar we could jam. I tried to tell him I still didn’t know how to play but he was completely unphased by that argument. In Trevor’s eyes there was no worse reason to not do something you want to do. We started jamming and eventually formed a band, just the two of us. Trevor had significantly more prowess with his instrument than I did with mine but I never felt inadequate in a band with him. We always had a relationship that it was ‘our’ band and even though he did most of the heavy lifting as far as the music went all decisions were completely mutual and shared between us.

And this is the greatest thing that Trevor gave me. To be honest it was one of the greatest things anyone has ever done for me. At this point in a person’s life social status is everything and I was extremely uncomfortable with where I was at but I didn’t know how to do anything about it. All of the sudden, because Trevor gave me the nudge I needed, I was in a band and, again because Trevor gave it to me, I had decision making ability within that band. All of the sudden I felt like somebody and I had my first bit of confidence as a teenager. All because of Trevor.

It was through my experience in a band with Trevor I would realize I had an aptitude and interest in the recording aspect to music. This would end up flourishing into what I regard as my life’s work. When I decided I wanted to get back into recording again in 2013 Trevor was one of the first people I told. What would follow was pages and pages of emails talking about the good old days, recording philosophy, music philosophy and life philosophy. When I actually recorded my first band in my current working iteration I took a splice from the first reel of tape I used and sent it to Trevor. He was not in the room that day but he was there. I was not the only person Trevor was in a band with but my only band was the two-piece he and I formed. Being in a band together is a special relationship and I have lost my only bandmate. I truly have no idea what my life would be like today if Trevor would not have taught me to forget about everything I thought was getting in my way and just do what I wanted to do.

When I look back at my life one of the things I regularly return to as a decision I am most happy about and proud of is the fact that I spent the better part of my late teens and early 20’s in my parent’s basement playing and recording music. When I think of what else I could have been doing at the time I cannot come up with a better alternative. And I owe that completely to Trevor Williams. As it is with youth, however, the thought never even crossed my mind that what I was also doing was cementing my place as the chief archivist of my best friend’s musical cannon.

Those recordings are some of my most cherished possessions. For us they are like family photos but they are also so much more. They are a record of a time and a place but they are also creations. There are three periods of time pertinent to every piece of recorded music: the time it was written, the time it was recorded and the time it was listened to. An artist’s interpretation of the piece changes from when it was written until the time they perform it for the recording. After its recorded and released the piece really takes a life of its own. As time progresses it evolves in the heart and mind of each individual person who heard it. Those of us that were present at the recording’s inception can only hope the intentions when we put into it at the beginning come through. The reality is it is out of our hands.

It will forever be impossible for me to listen to those recordings in the same light again. I’ll be searching for clues to the answers for all of the questions I have now. The same lyrics he wrote and sang 20 years ago will undoubtedly have an entirely different meaning now. If anyone reading this would like a copy of any these recordings please just ask me. If I don’t have them I can probably find them.

Trevor was a great soul. He always had a smile on his face. It was great to see the FB posting of your visits to Chicago. My heart felt condolences to Teresa, Lee, and your families.
