Thurman's obituary
Obituary for Thurman Henry Ellis Jr.
November 3, 1949 – September 22, 2025
Thurman Henry Ellis Jr., 75, of Trinity, Texas, passed away on September 22, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra “Sandy” Ellis; his daughters Tracie Ellis, Susan Richards, and Lanie Ellis; and his granddaughter Ashley Dodd.
He is survived by his stepdaughter Rebecca Richards; his grandchildren Sarah Richards, Joseph Garner, Gabrielle Allen , Preston Foster, and Justin Dodd; and his great-grandchildren Adelyn, Zayden, Olivia, Damon, Michael, and others who will carry on his legacy of love.
Thurman’s life was defined by both extraordinary talent and extraordinary sacrifice. A gifted musician, he could sit at a piano and play like Mozart, or take up a guitar and pour out sound with the brilliance of Jimi Hendrix. No instrument was beyond him — music was his second language, and it flowed effortlessly through everything he touched. He was also fluent in French and Spanish, a reminder of the many layers of brilliance he carried quietly.
In his younger years, he had opportunities to pursue a career in music, even crossing paths with the Oak Ridge Boys and songwriter Jimbo Henson. But when the time came, Thurman chose family over fame. He gave up the road and the spotlight to stand by those he loved, a decision that spoke louder than any stage could.
He will be remembered not only for his genius and his gifts, but for his strength, sacrifice, and loyalty. His love endures in the family who survives him, and in the music and spirit he left behind.
