Thomas's obituary
Tom was the son of the late Russell and Evalyn Maclin. He grew up in Baldwin, NY, and graduated from Baldwin High School. He next attended Rutgers University, where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. While at Rutgers, he played on the lacrosse team and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. While building a float for the homecoming parade, Tom met his wife Francine. After graduation, Tom enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Reserve, and spent many years as a reservist, retiring with the rank of Commander. Upon leaving active USCG duty, Tom joined E.I. DuPont de Nemours, enjoyed a long and successful career, and retired after 30 years in 1990. His first assignment for DuPont was in Parlin, NJ. Tom was active in the growing community in Manalapan Township during this assignment, serving as Treasurer from 1969-1972. During their 55 years of marriage, Tom and Fran moved several times as he advanced his career. Their favorite assignment was their 4 years in Frankfurt, Germany, which gave them a base to travel extensively in Europe as well as to Israel and Egypt. After retirement, they made their home in Stone Harbor, NJ, where Tom served as President of the local chapter of the Military Officers Association. He and Fran also volunteered with the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. Tom and Fran moved to the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, MD in 2013 where Tom enjoyed spending time with a group of close friends.
Tom always had time to participate in the local community, including the Boy Scouts, Newcomers Group of Wilmington, Cape May County Crime Stoppers, bridge groups, gourmet groups and civic associations. He was an avid reader, especially of history, and had a marvelous ability to recollect, not only on the many subjects he studied, but also of the important moments of his life. Whether it was working a concession stand on Jones Beach, with Fran by his side as he finished his shift, hiking the Philmont Scout Ranch, or playing football against the legendary Jim Brown in high school, Tom recounted those moments in detail. He was a willing storyteller, and would often weave the historical events that impacted him into the stories of his life. Tom was a loving husband to his wife Fran, and a great provider to their five children and seven grandchildren. His hard work and generosity will be remembered and appreciated by his family and friends.
